A modest levy increase by the county

The McLeod County Board approved a 2.73 percent property tax increase for 2016, the first time it has raised its levy since 2010.
The levy increase will provide the county with an additional $500,000 in revenue. As was pointed out at the Dec. 15 County Board meeting, the increase will not likely be felt by most residents, especially if their property values stayed the same or declined.
A property tax increase is never popular and, as Commissioner Doug Krueger pointed out, perhaps the county should be doing more to curtail spending.

A wave, a smile, can make a difference

I was eating my bowl of cereal last Wednesday morning, watching the latest excuse for coverage of the Republican presidential “debate.” I thought my milk was going to curdle as the candidates continued taunting each other like little kids in the school yard.
And one of these wants to lead the free world!
I usually watch the TV headlines before I head out for my morning walk. I debated whether to even go with the drizzling rain coming down, but a walk is my way of forcing myself out of bed and into another day.

An early gift — transportation funding

By U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar
D-Minnesota
’Twas the month before Christmas, when all through DC
Members of Congress found something on which they agree;
“Transportation funding boosts the economy and protects those we hold dear!”
And with that, Minnesotans received a gift early this year

Open houses set for Armstrong Avenue project

The Glencoe City Council heard that the plan review of the Armstrong Avenue project is moving along at its Monday night meeting.
The city will hold afternoon and early evening open houses on the project on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
City Administrator Mark Larson said the Council will likely set a bid opening date for the project at the Jan. 19 City Council meeting.
In a separate motion, the Council passed a resolution to restrict parking on the east side of Armstrong Avenue from Twin Cities Western Railroad to 11th Street.

County Board waives, reinstates assessor fee

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners waived the per parcel fee for assessing property at its Tuesday, Dec. 15, meeting.
And then it reinstated the fee after hearing from Donald Albrecht, Penn Township clerk, that he felt the board had acted inappropriately in taking the action.
McLeod County Assessor Sue Schulz brought up the topic during the annual hearing regarding the county fee schedule.
Schulz said she was unsure how the original fee of $10.50 per parcel was set, but said it was inadequate to cover expenses.

Help for chapped skin turns into business for Beckers

What started as a way to heal cracked hands has developed into a family effort that heals the whole of a family farm.
Fifteen-year-old Eddie Becker of Glencoe started the company Eddie’s Goat Milk Goods back in February. The idea came about when Eddie, who experienced chapped hands in the winter, started looking for a solution. After trying everything in the store, he turned to his pet goats for the answer.
Using the milk from his goats and playing around with recipes, Eddie created a lotion that worked not only for him, but others as well.

Stewart man injured in two-vehicle crash

Jeffrey Skala, 34, of Stewart, was injured in a two-vehicle, rear-end accident on Highway 212 in Stewart late Monday afternoon.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Skala was eastbound on Highway 212 in a 2005 Ford pickup and had slowed to make a left turn when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2007 Jeep Wagon driven by Rickey Holcomb, 31, of  Waconia.
Skala was taken by the Buffalo Lake Ambulance to the Glencoe hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Holcomb was not injured.

County Board raises salaries for elected officals

McLeod County commissioners and elected officials were awarded raises at the Dec. 15 County Board meeting.
The raises amount to 2 percent plus 20 cents per hour, which is equivalent to what other county employees received.
Commissioner Doug Krueger voted against the commissioner raises, saying he could not vote for a raise for himself when he voted against a levy increase. Krueger felt the county has not done enough to curtail spending.

Permanent memorial for fallen police officer being sought

Local law enforcement officials are looking for a permanent memorial for Hutchinson Police Officer Michael Hogan, who lost his life in the line of duty on Dec. 15, 1989, while responding to a shoplifting call at JC Penney in Hutchinson.
To that end, McLeod County Commissioner Joe Nagel, also a Hutchinson police officer, brought before the County Board Dec. 15 a resolution of support to name a portion of Highway 7 in memory of Hogan.
Nagel didn’t have to argue for support of the resolution, as all of the commissioners wholeheartedly backed it.

GSL Knowledge Bowl finishes 3rd in 57-team meet at Buffalo High

Glencoe-Silver Lake’s (GSL) Knowledge Bowl teams attend two different types of meets. The ones within GSL’s region include schools like Hutchinson, New London-Spicer, Willmar, Ortonville and Lac qui Parle Valley. The meets are relatively small. However, sometimes the teams go outside their region, where they meet teams from other parts of the state, and the meets may be much larger.
