Brewers improve to 2-0

The Glencoe Brewers improved to 2-0 on the young season by prevailing 4-3 on the road against the New Ulm Brewers on Saturday, April 29.

Glencoe never trailed in the contest, but were never able to gain a comfortable lead as New Ulm kept the game tight until the end.

Starting pitcher Derek Bratsch earned the win with three innings of spotless work that included four strikeouts. Tanner Grack claimed the save by tossing the final three frames, allowing one earned run on one hit and three walks while striking out five.

Girls' Golf takes on WCC

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ golf team braved the elements for a pair of meets last week, traveling to Timber Creek Golf Course on a waterlogged Tuesday, April 25, and also to New London-Spicer on a chilly afternoon three days later.

Watertown hosted its Wright County Conference West opponents on a rainy day as the GSL girls’ golfers were the only Panther varsity team to compete on a day of cancelations.

Baseball remains on a roll

A four-game winning streak has the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team remaining in the thick of the Wright County Conference West chase The Panthers entered this week with a 7-2 overall record, 5-2 in conference play, after a pair of WCC West wins over Rockford and Mayer Lutheran.

Starting pitcher Peyton Sell threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win against Rockford opened the week on Thursday, April 27.

GSL followed up that close victory with a somewhat more comfortable win, 5-1, against visiting Mayer Lutheran on Friday, April 28.

Boys' golf plays at Hutch

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ golf team placed eighth in 39th-Annual Hutchinson Invitational on Friday, April 28, at the Crow River Golf Club. Reid VanHove’s card of 92 over 18 holes led the Panthers to a team score of 384.

VanHove’s score was the lowest for a GSL boys’ golfer so far this season and was clinched with a 44 over the back nine.

Christian Higgins finished with a 94 after shooting 47s on both the front and back. Jayden Lachermeier finished with a 98 and Damien Silus wrapped up the Panthers’ team scoring with an even 100.

Panthers compete at Sibley East

After a home meet was postponed due to inclement weather on Tuesday, April 25, the Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams still managed to get in one competition last week. Both the Panther boys’ and girls’ squads took part in an unscored eight-team meet at Sibley East on Friday, April 28.

Zoe Christensen and Deanna Bondhus led the GSL girls to a near-sweep of the field events. Bondhus won both the long and triple jump events with respective leaps of 14 feet, 9.75 inches and 33-06.

Softball scorched by Rockets

The Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team took two on the chin in its lone day of competition last week, falling hard in a doubleheader at Rockford on Friday, April 28.

Losses of 11-1 and 13-1 dropped the Panthers back to .500 at 4-4 on the season. Three of GSL’s four losses have been of the 10-run variety.

The Rockets zoomed past the Panthers with a seven-run first inning in game one and never looked back. Kylie Ness scored GSL’s lone run in the sixth inning of the 10-run loss.
