Glencoe accepted in Blandin program

The Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism announces that Glencoe has been accepted to participate in the 2019 Blandin Community Leadership Program.
Blandin Leadership Programs develop and train a broad base of local leaders to build healthy communities by building on community strengths. Topics covered during training include identifying and describing community issues and opportunities through the lens of the nine dimensions of a healthy community, effective interpersonal communication, building social capital, understanding community power and mobilizing community resources.

Reservations open for campgrounds, shelters

Reservations are now being taken for campgrounds and park shelters at McLeod County parks.
Campground reservations will be taken online again in 2018. Customers are able to reserve electric and non-electric sites. There are no monthly rates; reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served paid basis.

Brownton bike-a-thon set for May 6

The Brownton Women’s Club will sponsor the annual Brownton bike-a-thon Sunday, May 6, with a rain date of Sunday, May 20.
The bike-a-thon is open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Children can take pledges, either per mile or a flat donation, from friends, relatives and neighbors. Children have from now until the time of the bike-a-thon to seek pledges. Registration, parental consent and pledge forms are available at the Brownton City Offices and Security Bank & Trust in Brownton.

Arts Prowl set for May 8-May 23

A new version of the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Panther Arts Prowl is to have the selected districtwide artwork up for two weeks.
The art display will begin Tuesday, May 8, and continue through Wednesday, May 23, in the commons area of the high school. There will be an open house and closing reception and awards ceremony on May 23. The awards presentation will be in the auditorium.

Aloysius ‘Al’ Arnold Wirtz, 85, NYA

Aloysius “Al” Arnold Wirtz, 85, of Norwood Young America, died Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, April 27, at Church of the Ascension in Norwood Young America with the Rev. Gregory Abbott officiating. Marilee Widmer was the organist. Musical selections were “Be Not Afraid,” “Morning Has Broken,” “Prayer of St. Francis” and “On Eagle’s Wings.”

Raymond Graupmann, Grand Rapids

Raymond Edward Graupmann, 90, of Grand Rapids, died peacefully at his home on April 26, 2018.
Services were held Monday, April 30, at Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids with the Rev. Kimbrel Johnson officiating.
Burial will be Wednesday, May 16, at 1 p.m., at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Plato.
Raymond Graupmann was born Feb. 1, 1928, to Edward and Dorothea Graupmann in Norwood Young America Township. He graduated from Glencoe High School in 1946, and also was a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture.

Doris Zeiher Heimkes, 76, of Arlington

Doris Zeiher Heimkes, 76, of Arlington, died Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 28, at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Green Isle with interment in the church cemetery.

Inducted into honor society

Candace Rogers-Siers of Glencoe and Jase Witucki of Silver Lake were among over 100 Ridgewater College students who were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society during ceremonies recently. Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor society for two-year colleges that recognizes students for their academic achievements, as well as leadership, service and scholarship. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and must have completed 12 credits.

To graduate from Mankato

Several area students will graduate from Minnesota State University, Mankato, on Saturday, May 5, including: Nicholas Rose, Glencoe, Bachelor of Science, accounting; Joshua VonBerge, Norwood Young America, Bachelor of Science, accounting, summa cum laude; Allyson Hlavka, Silver Lake, Bachelor of Science, accounting; and Tania Krueger, Silver Lake, Master of Science, counseling and student personnel.

Son born to Gueningsmans

Mark and Linda Gueningsman of Glencoe announce the arrival of a son, Tytan Mark Gueningsman, who was born April 23, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Tytan weighed 9 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 21 inches long at birth. Grandparents are Tony and Patricia Gueningsman of Winsted and Jeff and Sandy Thelen of Farmington.
