No need for tax increases with a surplus

Yesterday, state economists revealed that Minnesota is projected to have a budget surplus of $1.54 billion for the coming biennium. Officials said that the robust surplus is due to increased revenue and state spending that was lower than previously predicted. In addition to the projected surplus, the state’s budget reserve, or “rainy day fund,” has exceeded $2 billion for the first time in state history.


GSL students hear about dangers, impacts of vaping

He used a vape regularly during the summer, not thinking ahead to the rules he’d face once the school year began. And then he was caught vaping at school.
The Glencoe-Silver Lake High School senior was suspended for a day earlier this fall. His biggest concern was his father’s reaction.
“It was a little scary,” he said.


GSL Knowledge Bowl earns top-10 finishes at Hutchinson

A shorthanded Glencoe-Silver Lake Knowledge Bowl team finished among the top 10 teams at its final meet before the holiday break Saturday, Dec. 17, in Hutchinson.
Between holiday plans and illness, GSL was missing nine of the students who usually compete with the team, and this changed the number of teams GSL registered. Glencoe-Silver Lake entered one varsity team, three junior varsity teams, and two junior high teams.


Glencoe bank included in national bomb threat hoax

A local bank was among the financial institutions and businesses around the country receiving bomb threats deemed not credible last week.
Thursday, Dec. 13, staff at Security Bank on East 11th Street in downtown Glencoe called police at 12:17 p.m. after receiving a bomb threat via email. Police didn’t learn until later in the day other banks, businesses and schools around the country had received similar threats via email, said Jim Raiter, chief of the Glencoe Police Department.


City OKs budget, levy, church’s columbarium request

After weeks of discussions on the Glencoe’s proposed property tax levy and its budget, the city council put the issue to rest Monday night with a unanimous vote.
The council OK’d a 2019 levy of $2,545,145 at the Dec. 17 meeting, the final scheduled official city council get-together of 2018. The levy reflects a 6.804 percent increase dedicated to paying down debt on previous bond issues for infrastructure projects. The city paid off bonds issued in 2003 for improvements to County Road 3 in 2018 and will make its final bond payment in 2019 on debt issued in 1999 for the aquatic center.


First Lutheran students help make a boy’s Christmas wish come true

The students at First Evangelical Lutheran School don’t know and will likely never meet Drake Quibodeaux. And yet they went out of their way to make his Christmas wish come true.
Quibodeaux lives in Vinton, La., a small town of about 3,350 people in southwestern Louisiana. It is billed as “The Gateway to Cajun Country.” Like children in Glencoe, Quibodeaux enjoys time outdoors fishing, hunting and four-wheeling. Anything to be outdoors.


For chamber lighting winner, Christmas lights about family, fun

For Vanessa Kohout, the prize money she and her family won in this year’s Glencoe Chamber of Commerce Christmas Lighting contest might go toward covering the increase in the family’s electric bill. There’s just as good a chance it will help fund the purchase of more lights for next year.
Kohout and her family live at 811 Glenmoor Lane. They won the top prize of $200 donated by Glencoe Power & Light. The second-place prizewinner – the Christensen family at 305 Andrews Drive – won $150. The Voight family lives at 108 Wacker Dr. They won the $50 prize for third place.


City sets public hearing on proposed body camera policy

Having approved body cameras for its police officers in the 2019 budget, the Glencoe City Council will host a public hearing on a proposed policy governing the department’s use of the technology.
The city council will host a public hearing on the proposed policy Jan. 7, 7 p.m.
“This policy is intended to provide officers with instruction on when and how to use body worn cameras (BWCs) so that they may reliably record their contacts with the public in accordance with the law,” the policy states.

Silver Lake approves 3.7 percent levy increase

The Silver Lake City Council approved a $865,956.70 city budget for 2019, at its regular meeting Monday, Dec. 17. The amount is a 3.22 percent increase from 2018.
The tax levy also increased 3.7 percent to $519,429.70 for 2019.
In September, the council approved a preliminary levy increase of 5.7 percent. City staff has worked since then to decrease the overall budget.
