Silver Lake residents stand for their police officers

Silver Lake residents sent their city council a clear message at its Tuesday night meeting: most residents are proud of their police department — even if it costs more than outsourcing to the county sheriff’s office.
Council members indicated contracting hours to the sheriff’s office hasn’t been less expensive in years past, though. According to current and past council members, as well as citizens at the Jan. 22 meeting, whenever a Silver Lake officer resigns, the council contemplates outsourcing hours to the sheriff’s department.

Silver Lake hears presentation on proposed apartments

“It’s exciting, it’s exciting,” Mayor Dorothy Butler said at the end of a presentation given by Joe and Rachel Yates, discussing proposed floor plans for an apartment complex they plan to build on Main Street in Silver Lake.
Although the city council didn’t take any formal action at its Jan. 22 meeting, Joe Yates asked for an extra four lots of city-owned property, but also made clear he didn’t want to pay for them — a common subsidy cities use to get new business to town.

Chronicle publisher to lead state newspaper association

Karin Ramige, publisher at McLeod Publishing, Inc. in Glencoe, was elected president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association at the organization’s annual convention Friday, Jan. 25.
Ramige is a second-generation newspaper publisher, taking the reins from her father, Bill Ramige, in 2014. Bill Ramige served as MNA president 1995-1996.
Karin is the first daughter of a past MNA president to be elected president of the association. She introduced Gov. Tim Walz in his address to MNA convention attendees Friday (Jan. 25).

MnDOT increasing some area highway speed limits by 5 mph

After a five-year study, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is recommending speed limits on some highways around the state increase by 5 mph.
The sections of highway in the area studied for slight increases in speed limits – from 55 mph to 60 mph – are primarily rural. The new speed limits will increase when MnDOT crews post signs informing drivers of the new limits.

Quotes due tomorrow for tree work for Harpel’s project

Quotes from a select group of contractors qualified to appropriately trim and remove trees from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) right-of-way along Highway 212 are due tomorrow, Jan. 31, in an early step for the development of Kwik Trip.
The Glencoe City Council unanimously approved a resolution sending the tree trimming and removal out for quotes Tuesday, Jan. 22. The city’s contract engineer, John Rodeberg of SEH Inc., said the project is expected to cost about $15,000 and should be completed this spring.

City council tends to public works needs, projects

Public works projects, expenses and transparency dominated the Glencoe City Council’s meeting Tuesday, Jan. 22.
But not everybody was on board with all the proposals.
The council voted 4-1 in favor of spending $52,890 rehabilitating 11 manholes on a future section of East 14th Street, Gruenhagen Drive, East 11th Street and East Eighth Street.
The city had $30,000 budgeted for manhole work in 2018 and $50,000 budgeted in 2019.

Who was Carl Hayden? Mystery solved

Remember Carl W. Hayden?
You’re not alone if you don’t. But his name is on a plaque affixed to the holding vault at the Glencoe City Cemetery.
So who is Carl W. Hayden, how did his name get on that plaque and who put it there?
Since I’m retired and apparently had nothing else to do, I was asked to find out what I could about Mr. Hayden. So I walked to the cemetery.
First of all, I never knew the vault was there let alone the plaque. So I read the plaque.

Letter to the editor: Applying ‘farmers’ logic’ to end immigration

To the editor,
This letter is in response and regard to the U.S. Government shutdown and the focal point, “the wall.”
Having grown up and currently living in an agricultural area with livestock (farm animals), I can relate to “the wall.” In my world, it is very simple. If we want to keep the bull from the cows, the boar pig away from the sows, horses apart from the sheep, or the young animals away from their mothers at weaning time, we use a fence to keep them apart.

Plan smart – Our view: City streets too valuable to ignore

TThe amount of money being discussed is staggering. But the cost of doing nothing or cutting corners is equally as concerning. Glencoe residents can only hope their city councilors make good, sound decisions regarding city streets.
Two weeks ago, representatives of the city’s engineering firm provided the city council with a series of options regarding the maintenance of city streets in the north-central and northwestern sections of Glencoe. By 2035, the streets will be 50 or 60 years old. The municipal sewer and water lines beneath them will be significantly older.
