Silver Lake residents sent their city council a clear message at its Tuesday night meeting: most residents are proud of their police department — even if it costs more than outsourcing to the county sheriff’s office.
Council members indicated contracting hours to the sheriff’s office hasn’t been less expensive in years past, though. According to current and past council members, as well as citizens at the Jan. 22 meeting, whenever a Silver Lake officer resigns, the council contemplates outsourcing hours to the sheriff’s department.

Karin Ramige, publisher at McLeod Publishing, Inc. in Glencoe, was elected president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association at the organization’s annual convention Friday, Jan. 25.
Ramige is a second-generation newspaper publisher, taking the reins from her father, Bill Ramige, in 2014. Bill Ramige served as MNA president 1995-1996.
Karin is the first daughter of a past MNA president to be elected president of the association. She introduced Gov. Tim Walz in his address to MNA convention attendees Friday (Jan. 25).

Quotes from a select group of contractors qualified to appropriately trim and remove trees from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) right-of-way along Highway 212 are due tomorrow, Jan. 31, in an early step for the development of Kwik Trip.
The Glencoe City Council unanimously approved a resolution sending the tree trimming and removal out for quotes Tuesday, Jan. 22. The city’s contract engineer, John Rodeberg of SEH Inc., said the project is expected to cost about $15,000 and should be completed this spring.

Clarence Zebell, 96, of Glencoe, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, at Glencoe Regional Health Services in Glencoe.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, 11 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, with interment following at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 1, 4 to 7 p.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday.

To the editor,
This letter is in response and regard to the U.S. Government shutdown and the focal point, “the wall.”
Having grown up and currently living in an agricultural area with livestock (farm animals), I can relate to “the wall.” In my world, it is very simple. If we want to keep the bull from the cows, the boar pig away from the sows, horses apart from the sheep, or the young animals away from their mothers at weaning time, we use a fence to keep them apart.
