Helen Milbrand, 93, of Glencoe, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, at Ebenezer Bel Rae Senior Living in Mounds View.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 16, 1 p.m., at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Helen Township, rural Glencoe, with interment at a later date in the church cemetery.
A gathering of family & friends will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, noon to 1 p.m., at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Helen Township, rural Glencoe.
Memorials preferred to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.


First Ev. Lutheran spud crew

Five men from Glencoe's First Evangelical Lutheran Church helped prepare about 920 pounds of potatoes for the church's 68th pancake dinner Sunday, Feb. 3. In addition to potato pancakes, regular pancakes, sausages, cheese, applesauce, and ice cream were served to approximately 900 people.

When it's that cold, nothing works well

Harlan Wawrzyniak, the owner of Harlan's Auto Repair of Silver Lake, loaded a Chevy pickup for towing to his shop Thursday afternoon. With the temperature well below zero, the truck's fuel pump failed, a condition worsened by the cold weather.

A semi-truck driver lost control of his rig on Highway 212 near its intersection with Hilton Avenue just west of Glencoe early Monday afternoon. There were no injuries in the reported crash.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team dropped to 9-9 on the season after a 57-45 loss at Watertown-Mayer on Friday, Feb. 1.
It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Panthers, a skid broken only by a postponement as a home tilt against Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday, Jan. 29, was not played due to inclement weather.
GSL held its own for the first half at Watertown, as the Panthers and Royals headed into the locker room tied 20-20 at halftime.
The second half was an entirely different story, however, as W-M rolled up 37 points to snag the 12-point win.


Grapplers lose twice at MW tri

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team lost both of its matches at the Mound Westonka Triangular on Thursday, Jan. 31.
GSL/LP lost 33-27 to Orono and 37-27 to the host White Hawks in the team’s lone action of the week.
The Panthers held a 15-9 lead on the Spartans after five matches. Jace Cacka scored an 11-1 major decision at 120 pounds, followed by Sawyer Varpness’ win by fall at 126 and Carter Ruschmeier’s 18-3 technical fall at 132.


Gymnasts top Orono, Greeley wins AA

The Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team claimed a victory in the first of its back-to-back home meets to wrap up the regular season, topping Orono 119.65-114.70 on Thursday, Jan. 31.
Marissa Greeley won the individual all-around competition with a score of 31.75, followed by Gia Venier in second place at 31.35. Makayla Wigern was fourth with an even 30.
