Mildred ZumHofe, 90, of Norwood Young America

Mildred ZumHofe, wife of Harold, 90, of Norwood Young America, passed away Tuesday, June 18, at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 22, 11 a.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, with interment following in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 21, 4 to 7 p.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday.

Former Miss Glencoe recalls a year of fun, hometown pride

Sheila Cohrs (now Sheila Augustine) was crowned Miss Glencoe shortly after graduating from Glencoe High School in the summer of 1984.

Wraspir named second team all-state

Glencoe-Silver Lake softball pitcher Brianna Wraspir was named to the Class AA All-State second team by the Minnesota Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Thursday, June 13. Wraspir posted 211 strikeouts during her senior season, helping the Panthers to a 17-6 record and the Wright County Conference West co-championship.

Storm water work

A crew from Schneider Excavating continued work Monday morning, June 17, on the storm water pond that will serve Kwik Trip and a possible hotel just off the intersection of Highway 212 and Falcon Avenue. The city says the pond is just under one acre, is about 10 feet deep and will hold around 1.5 million gallons of storm water.

Panthers battle, fall short at state tournament

Reece Schwirtz slid home with the game-tying run as the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team rallied to knot its Class AA state consolation semifinal game against Perham at 9-9 Friday, June 14. The Panthers fell 10-9 to the fourth-seeded Yellowjackets after losing 4-3 to top-seeded Duluth Marshall in the state opener one day earlier. GSL wrapped the season with a 19-7 overall record.

Dairy Days in Silver Lake

Olivia Maita Gonzalez, 7, of Silver Lake, was more interested in petting the cow than guessing its age and weight during Silver Lake's Dairy Days festivities June 13. Gonzalez won Miss Royalty International's Miss Midwest and competes for national honors in Milwaukee, Wis. this August.

Gordon Shrode, 92, of Lester Prairie, passed away Wednesday, June 19, at Emerald Crest Assisted Living in Victoria.

Panthers battle, fall short at state tournament

Dreams of a state championship didn’t die without a fight as the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team took a pair of seeded teams to the limit before falling in back-to-back games at the state Class AA tournament in St. Cloud last week.
Unseeded GSL faced No. 1 seed Duluth Marshall in the state opener on Thursday, June 13, before taking on fourth-seeded Perham in the consolation semifinal the next day, falling by a single run in both games to end the season with a 19-7 record.
“I’m extremely proud and thankful,” coach Dean Schwirtz said after the Perham loss.

Bruins sweep Irish, Hawks

A pair of Crow River Valley League wins over Hamburg and Green Isle has boosted the Brownton Bruins to a 9-2 overall record.
Brownton entered this week trailing Waconia by just one-half game atop the CRVL standings with an 8-2 league mark.
The Bruins opened last week with a 10-4 victory over one-time league power Green Isle, which has won just two league games so far this season.
