GSL baseball is final undefeated team in Section 5AA bracket

Second baseman Reece Schwirtz fired a strike to first base for an out during Glencoe-Silver Lake’s playoff win over Southwest Christian.

Graduates in motion

Kindergarten graduates at Lincoln Elementary School enjoyed a fun, music-filled graduation ceremony Thursday, May 30, in the high school auditorium. An overflow crowd of parents, grandparen ts and friends saw the 114 kindergarten students receive diplomas from Lincoln Elementary School Principal Bill Butler.

Panthers one win from return to state tourney

Ty Christensen scored one of 11 runs logged by Glencoe-Silver Lake in an 11-1 defeat of Southwest Christian Tuesday, May 28, during the Section 5AA baseball tournament.

Open for the summer

With school out for the summer, the Glencoe Aquatic Center opened for the summer Friday, May 31. A warm spell over the weekend and early this week made the pool a popular spot for children and parents. Teddy Zajicek, 5, enjoyed his first ride of the season on the slide. Teddy and his younger brother, Harrison, 3, visited the pool Monday with their mom.

Section champion Panther 4x200 quartet heading to state meet

The Glencoe-Silver Lake 4x200-meter relay foursome of (left to right) Ellie Sonju, Rhyan Herrmann, Malayh Metcalf and Emily Graupmann won the Section 2A championship with a time of one minute, 46.88 seconds at the sectional title meet at Mankato West High School on Saturday, June 1. With the victory, the quartet advances to the state Class A meet this weekend as GSL’s lone representatives. The squad is scheduled to run in the preliminary round at Hamline University at 4:20 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Grams goes all 11 innings as Bruins top Hollanders

It took 11 innings, but the Brownton Bruins were able to claim a 2-1 home win against Cologne on Sunday, June 2, behind a complete-game performance from starting pitcher Ryan Grams.
Grams faced 39 batters in his extended outing, scattering 10 hits and three walks while striking out 10.
The only run allowed by the Bruins ace was on a pair of singles in the seventh inning as the visiting Hollanders knotted the game at 1-1.
Brownton had taken the game’s initial lead after Deryk Randt secured a leadoff walk and scored on a Jason Rosenau two-out single in the fifth.

Panthers one win from return to state tourney

With just one more victory, the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team will clinch its first trip to the state tournament since 2015.
The Panthers, seeded fourth in the Section 5AA bracket after a 14-5 regular season, have run roughshod over their opponents in recording four wins by a combined total run differential of 30-6.
After dispatching Watertown-Mayer 8-1 in the sectional opener on Thursday, May 23, GSL – this year’s tournament host – continued its winning ways with three more wins to propel the team into the championship round.

Plato tops Irish, Saints

The Plato Blue Jays improved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of victories in Crow River Valley League play over the weekend.
Plato first topped St. Boni 11-7 on Saturday, June 1, before completing a regular season sweep of top rival Green Isle, 12-5, on Sunday, June 2.
Chris Odegaard tossed six innings of six-hit, two-walk ball while striking out six in the win over the Saints.
Plato took a 5-0 lead in the third inning and held off the visitors from there, with Mitchell Boesche notching the save.
