Shirley Vorlicek, 79, of Silver Lake

Shirley Jeanette Vorlicek, 79, of Silver Lake passed away Sunday, July 14, at St Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Vorlicek will be held Friday, July 19, 10:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18, 4-8 p.m., at The Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake. A Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. Further visitation will be held at the funeral home Friday, July 19, 9 a.m.

Making walls, one load at a time

Workers from Rice Lake Construction poured concrete Friday morning, July 12, into the forms they had built the previous day for walls of new a building at the city’s wastewater treatment plant on Seventh Street south of Highway 212. The $25 million expansion and upgrade project is underway on the site of the existing plant while the facility remains operational.

Glencoe resident Marie Hebeisen will celebrate her 100th birthday Sunday, July 21, with her daughter, Gail, and other family members and friends.

VFW baseballers head to playoffs

It was a sparkling end to the regular season for the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team, with the squad winning its final trio of games last week.
Glencoe opened the final three-game set by sweeping a split doubleheader against both the Hutchinson VFW and Jr. Legion ball clubs.
Starting pitcher Jake Christianson turned in a complete-game four-hitter in the opening game against the Hutch VFW squad, striking out six and allowing just one earned run in a 10-2 victory.

Plato losing skid hits five games

An injury-ravaged Plato Blue Jays squad continued to limp towards the end of the regular season with two more losses last weekend.
Deprived of several key contributors, the defending Class C state champions have lost five in a row and six of its last nine to drop to 8-12 overall and 8-9 in Crow River Valley League play.
Plato opened the weekend in a harsh manner, falling 10-0 to the visiting Carver Black Sox. The visitors scored the only run they needed in the top of the first inning, as the hosts mustered up just five hits in the contest.

Legion playoffs begin this week

The Plato American Legion Post 641 baseball team heads into the postseason this week on a high note after winning two of its final three regular-season games.
Plato began last week by splitting a doubleheader at Norwood Young America on Wednesday, July 10.
While Plato succumbed to a late rally in a 5-4 loss to NYA, Post 641 also notched an 11-2 victory over the hosts.
Starting pitcher Spencer Lilienthal went all five innings in the nine-run win, allowing no earned runs on five hits and two walks.
