The National Weather Service has confirmed storms spawned three tornadoes in McLeod County Sunday afternoon.

Polka music, kolaches mark 50 years of Pola-Czesky Days

The City of Silver Lake this weekend, Aug. 2-4, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pola-Czesky Days — an annual event that highlights the town’s rich Polish and Czech roots.
Activities and attractions have come and gone while some things haven’t changed throughout the years. As many reflect on the event that celebrates the town’s shared culture, it’s hard to overlook the volunteerism and pride surrounding it.

Letter to editor - Glencoe blood drive exceeded Red Cross goal

To the editor,
We had a wonderful outcome by exceeding the goal the American Red Cross set for us.
After the cancellation of our first Glencoe Community Blood Drive in April (due to a nasty snowstorm), the second scheduled Glencoe Community Blood Drive of 2019 was held Wednesday, July 24, at the Glencoe City Center ballroom.

Find middle ground – Our view: Morningside project too important to let slip away

We learned last week McLeod County and the City of Glencoe were putting plans to extend Morningside Drive to a connection with County Road 15 on the shelf for 2019. The project would require the opening of a railroad crossing. It, the county and city contend, will be sent out for bids early next year at a time when construction companies are most inclined to offer their best prices.

To the editor,
Thank you to everyone that participated in the American Reed Cross Blood Drive at the Stewart Community Center on July 17, 2019.
A total of 22 units of blood was collected, including two power red donations. Thank you to first-time donor, Katie Maiers of Stewart. Michael Markgraf reached his third gallon donation. Andrew Asche and Kenneth Schaufler reached their two-gallon donations. Congratulations to all.
The next Red Cross Blood Drive at the Stewart Community Center will be Jan. 7, 2020. We hope to see you there.

Lawrence Winter, 72, of Glencoe

Lawrence J. Winter of Glencoe Minnesota passed away June 3, 2019 at United Hospital of St. Paul at the age of 72.
He was born Sept. 29, 1946, to Leo and Marie Winter of Glencoe. He graduated from Glencoe High School in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1964. Mr. Winter served in the Navy submarine division as a master electrician for seven years and was honorably discharged in 1971. From there, he attended forestry and horticulture schools in Oregon and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Mildred Stachowiak, 94, of Silver Lake

Mildred Stachowiak, 94, of Silver Lake, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, at Hutchinson Health in Hutchinson.
A private family burial service was held at St. Joseph Cemetery Wednesday, July 31. A celebration of life will be Wednesday, July 31, 2 to 4 p.m., at Cedar Crest Estate in the Gathering Room in Silver Lake, for sharing of memories.

Mark Wiederholt, 76, of Winsted

Mark Allen Wiederholt, 76, of Winsted passed away Thursday, July 25, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
Mr. Wiederholt was born June 21, 1943, in Los Angeles, the son of Theodore “Ted” and Elaine H. (Henke) Wiederholt.
He formerly managed Green Giant in Winsted and worked as a mechanic at Green Giant in Glencoe. He was employed at Green Giant for 46 years.
Mr. Wiederholt enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, woodworking and going with friends to breakfast at Broadway B’s in Cokato.

Mark Allen Wiederholt, 76, of Winsted passed away Thursday, July 25, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
A memorial service for Mark Wiederholt will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 7 p.m., at The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. Frank Claude and The Rev. Joseph Mary will officiate.
A private interment will be at Rice Lake Cemetery in Wells.
A time of gathering will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 3 p.m., until time of services at the funeral home.
