McLeod Emergecy Food Shelf Director Lennie Albers acquired new shelving from Shopko when it closed its stores. The shelves are part of the SuperShelf program.

Back-to-back losses sting Bruins

Brownton’s Nick Heller slid home ahead of the ball for Brownton’s second run of the Bruins’ 7-5 loss at Green Isle on Sunday, July 14. The defeat dented Brownton’s hopes of the top Region 7C seed.

Making walls, one load at a time

Workers from Rice Lake Construction poured concrete Friday morning, July 12, into the forms they had built the previous day for walls of new a building at the city’s wastewater treatment plant on Seventh Street south of Highway 212. The $25 million expansion and upgrade project is underway on the site of the existing plant while the facility remains operational.

Glencoe resident ‘loves life’ – Centenarian will be celebrating big day

Glencoe resident Marie Hebeisen will celebrate her 100th birthday Sunday, July 21, with her daughter, Gail, and other family members and friends.

VFW baseballers head to playoffs

It was a sparkling end to the regular season for the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team, with the squad winning its final trio of games last week.
Glencoe opened the final three-game set by sweeping a split doubleheader against both the Hutchinson VFW and Jr. Legion ball clubs.
Starting pitcher Jake Christianson turned in a complete-game four-hitter in the opening game against the Hutch VFW squad, striking out six and allowing just one earned run in a 10-2 victory.

Plato losing skid hits five games

An injury-ravaged Plato Blue Jays squad continued to limp towards the end of the regular season with two more losses last weekend.
Deprived of several key contributors, the defending Class C state champions have lost five in a row and six of its last nine to drop to 8-12 overall and 8-9 in Crow River Valley League play.
Plato opened the weekend in a harsh manner, falling 10-0 to the visiting Carver Black Sox. The visitors scored the only run they needed in the top of the first inning, as the hosts mustered up just five hits in the contest.

Legion playoffs begin this week

The Plato American Legion Post 641 baseball team heads into the postseason this week on a high note after winning two of its final three regular-season games.
Plato began last week by splitting a doubleheader at Norwood Young America on Wednesday, July 10.
While Plato succumbed to a late rally in a 5-4 loss to NYA, Post 641 also notched an 11-2 victory over the hosts.
Starting pitcher Spencer Lilienthal went all five innings in the nine-run win, allowing no earned runs on five hits and two walks.

Legion playoffs begin this week

As the regular season nears its close, the Glencoe Brewers remain in contention for the Crow River Valley League North Division title after splitting a pair of league games last week.
The Brewers were tied with the Wildcats, each sporting a 9-6 record in circuit play, after Waconia drubbed Winsted 12-0 in seven innings on Monday, July 15.
Waconia also was a thorn in the Brewers’ saddle earlier in the week after topping Glencoe 5-4 at Vollmer Field on Tuesday, July 9.

GSL’s Collins, Stuewe compete at nationals

The Glencoe-Silver Lake trapshooting team sent two of its members to the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship in Mason, Michigan on July 11-14.
Last year was the first-ever national championship held for high school athletes.
This year’s event was once again hosted by the Michigan Trapshooters Association in Mason, just 20 miles south of Lansing, and features 44 trap fields.
Both Katie Collins and Norique Stuewe participated in the individual competition where they competed against 1,800 athletes from across the nation.

Back-to-back losses sting Bruins

Hopes that the Brownton Bruins had of heading into the postseason as the Crow River Valley League champion and No. 1 regional seed were dealt a serious blow last week as the squad went 1-2 over three league games.
Despite beginning the stretch with a 5-4 defeat of Hamburg on Wednesday, July 10, the Bruins wilted over the hot weekend with back-to-back losses to Watertown and Green Isle.
The defeats set Brownton back into third place in both the CRVL South Division and Region 7C standings with an 11-5 record, one game behind Young America and one-half game behind Carver.
