County commissioners made the right trail decision

To the editor,
In 2015, a majority of McLeod County Commissioners voted to organize a committee to create a McLeod County Trail Plan.
The stated goal was to unite McLeod County around trail development. Former Commissioner Sheldon Nies stated that, “It would put everyone in the loop.” At that time, Nies speculated that the county could have similarly benefited from an inclusive committee the prior year, when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources considered, and declined, to extend the Dakota Rail Regional Trail to connect to the Luce Line State Trail for a third year.

To be honest, Congress should take a good look inward

By Lee Hamilton
There are a lot of reasons why Congress finds itself hamstrung in Washington and discounted by the people it serves at home.
These include long-term trends over which it has little control: The political polarization of the country; the oceans of money that get dumped into the political process; the push by successive presidents to amass as much executive power as possible.

Do roads matter? — Our view: Local-option sales tax deserves consideration

In the late-1990s, the Minnesota Legislature granted Minnesota’s 87 counties the opportunity to impose an additional sales tax upon themselves to pay for transportation or transit.
One could argue the measure was the legislature’s way of granting a potential funding mechanism to counties with a greater demand for transportation projects than the state could not, or would not, deliver. In its wisdom, the legislature’s creation of a local-option sales tax allowed county commissioners across the state to OK a slight sales tax increase without a public referendum.

U of M Extension honors Ide Family as farm family of 2019

The Ide farm has been running since 1969. Larry and Bertha became farmers that year by purchasing 80 acres for a cow calf and sow feeder pig operation. A few years later, the cattle were sold and trees were logged for land. In 1993, Nate joined the business. Seven years later, they sold the remaining hogs and expanded land for grain.
Currently, the farm owns 240 acres yet grows on 2,000 total acres. Larry and Bertha still reside on the farm. Nate works full time on the farm with his sons Mike and Phillip. Their daughter, Beth Ann, lives in Stewartville.

Silver Lake OKs business subsidy tools, policy

Attracting new business to a small town is always a priority for any city council. On Monday, the Silver Lake City Council took a step in that direction by approving a business subsidy policy.
Having the policy in place allows the city council the ability to offer potential businesses an incentive to come to Silver Lake.
Incentives could include, but are not limited to, discounted land purchases, a small business loan, tax increment financing or other tax related subsidies.
The policy lays out criteria for approval which includes;
