Gymnasts look to bounce back after third place finish

Although the Panthers’ gymnastics team fell to third place at its tri-meet Thursday, Dec. 19, Head Coach Kim Hahn isn’t upset with her team. As the season is starting to take hold, Hahn said her team is likely fatigued — especially in a sport like gymnastics, a sport where bursts of extreme physical exertion is a part of getting a good score.
The Panthers had the low score at 119.275. Annandale had the high score of 133.15, and Litchfield was just below the Cardinals at 132.525.

Oelfkes want their Christmas light display to be a family tradition

They enjoy the family time working on additions to the Christmas lights on their home and watching passing cars slow down to thoroughly enjoy the display. They added to it this year and have more additions planned for the years to come.
But the additions aren’t intended to make the family’s Christmas light display the biggest, brightest or gawdiest. The Oelfke plan is to make their display a tasteful display that honors the season and what it’s really all about, the nativity of Christ, family and tradition.

City council passes on pay raise until 2021

Rather than take an increase in compensation for the time they put into the position, members of the Glencoe City Council set aside the opportunity to vote the next city council a raise that might not go into effect until 2023.
At their last scheduled meeting of the year, Monday, Dec. 16, the council voted 3-2 to table until after the 2020 election discussion on a proposal for a slight increase in compensation. Councilors Milan Alexander and Allen Robeck opposed tabling the issue.

School district, union reach possible contract deal

An all-day mediation session between the union representing the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s paraprofessionals and secretaries has produced a possible contract agreement covering the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.

Peterson one of two Dems to break party vote on impeachment

Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., who represents Congressional District 7 and includes McLeod County, was again one of two Democrats to vote against otherwise party-line impeachment measures against President Donald Trump.
He recently voted against impeachment in the U.S. House of Representatives, and in October Peterson voted against the impeachment inquiry. The other Democrat who voted in line with Peterson, Rep. Jeff Van Drew, D-N.J., after the vote pledged to switch to the Republican Party.
Both are in districts that voted for Trump in the 2016 election.

Silver Lake Council looks at collaboration

Representatives from the Silver Lake City Council held a joint workshop with the Lester Prairie City Council to discuss ways the two cities could collaborate in an effort to increase services while reducing costs.
With the resignation of the police chief in Silver Lake earlier this month, the city reached out to area police departments for interim support for the administrative duties and oversight of the police department while they search for a new police chief. Silver Lake later contracted the McLeod County Sherriff’s Office for the job.

Farewell to a coach, mentor and friend

When the cleanup was completed following his father’s wake and funeral Mass Tuesday, Dec. 17, there was no doubt where GSL assistant basketball coach Scott Tschimperle would be later that afternoon, on a bus heading for a game with his players.
Scott Tschimperle is and always will be, after all, the son of a coach.

GSL art club is refuge for students who want art, unity

From the meticulously decorated banners the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team bursts through before games to the long-standing mural people see before entering the purple gym at the high school, the GSL Art Club plays an integral role in contributing to the school district’s visual ambiance.
A group of students, typically between 10-15, meet after school in Landes’s room to work on various projects. Sometimes they’ll work individually on personal projects, and sometimes they’ll collaborate on a piece that calls for a group of artists.

In unforeseen issue, county finds it needs to replace router for government center

As construction for the McLeod County Government Center is underway, county staff identified an issue with the transition of the current core router to the government center. Commissioners voted to fully replace the router for $67,224.15 at a meeting Tuesday, Dec. 17.
A core router is a piece of hardware technology that’s often called the backbone of a computer network, allowing data communication between computers on the same network.

Let’s make 2020 ‘The Year of the Community’

If you looked only at the big picture, you'd have to say we live in deeply troubled times. It seems we've never been more polarized. Political discourse feels more like a war zone than a thoughtful national conversation.
But what happens when you zoom in closer?
