Split council still wants county to move recycling center

Sometime after the holidays, the McLeod County Board will revisit Glencoe’s request to relocate the rural recycling center at the intersection of East 10th Street and North Ives Avenue.
The question is, which faction of the city council will McLeod County listen to?
Monday, Dec. 13, the council discussed how it would approach the county’s abrupt tabling of a split request to relocate the recycling center. Earlier this fall, the council voted 3-2 to ask the county to move the facility.

Councilor wants to know where is the line of profanity

City’s options for what some deem offensive signage highly limited

Glencoe City Councilor Allen Robeck is concerned about tenor of signage critical of President Biden some residents are displaying. Robeck is quick to point out he supports freedom of expression, but believes some of the signage on display has gone too far.
The signs residents have or had on their property state “F**k Biden.” One of the signs directs a similar sentiment toward the people who voted for President Biden.

Letter – Historical Medicare premium increase due in 2022

To the editor,
In 2022, the Medicare Part B standard premium will increase from $148.50 to $170.10. This $21.60 increase (14.5 pecent) is the largest since the Medicare program began in 1965 and much higher than was originally expected. There are many reasons for the higher-than-expected increase:
• A rise in health care costs, an increased use of health care,
• Congress limited the increase in the 2021 premium,
• The FDA approved a new medication (Aduhelm) to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

Projected surplus belongs to hard-working Minnesotans

By Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen
I wanted to write you a quick note sharing news that Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) released its new budget forecast Tuesday morning, showing a $7.746 billion projected surplus. This is the largest surplus in state history. The $3 billion of surplus is a carryover from last biennium.
That figure does not include federal American Rescue Plan funding or COVID-19 response money.

A worthwhile exercise – Our view: Thanks to the few who took the time

The annual truth-in-taxation public hearings continue to be worthwhile exercise in local governance.
Glencoe held its TnT hearing last Monday, Dec. 6. We thank the few people who took precious time to offer the city council their thoughts.
The city meeting featured a blend of concerns from taxpayers regarding the increase in property taxes and what is all-too-often concerns raised by people who understandably don’t full understand a complicated property tax system. Others want the council to cut spending but offer no suggestions on what to cut.
