Bruins head back to the diamond after unscheduled time off

After an unscheduled time off the diamond to await the results of coronavirus testing, the Brownton Bruins are able to return to play this week.
The Bruins had their July 1 game rescheduled. With the testing coming back negative, Brownton can return to the field.

Blue Jays drop a tough one

In a modified season where the young Plato Blue Jays are still looking for their offensive stride, a solid pitching outing is especially valuable. Losing an extra-inning game on a home run hurts.
But that’s how things have gone for the Blue Jays so far this summer. Plato fell to Winsted, 4-3, in 10 innings Sunday, July 5. The setback pushes Plato to 0-5.

Preserving history, Church of Peace ‘gifts’ its home

It dates back to 1890, and thanks to a collaboration of two Christian congregations, the church on East 11th Street will remain a house of worship.
To the members of Church of Peace, that is more important than ownership. The congregation is so committed to maintaining their church home as a place where people come to worship, they were willing to offer the building at 520 11th St. E. as a gift to another congregation in need of the space.
The property was a donation Buffalo Creek Community Church couldn’t turn down.

Through rain, sleet and snow, she delivered the daily news

A 13-year-old girl’s bicycle zips along gravel roads as the sun rises and birds chirp, signalling the early start of a new day as she delivers the morning newspaper.
Rain, snow or shine, Betty Dvorak was there weekdays and Sunday mornings to ensure people got their daily news.
Unbeknownst to Dvorak, however, that would mark the beginning of delivering newspapers for over 40 years.

Thinking about running for elected city office this fall?

Rather than sit back and enter your thoughts on a social media site how a particular issue should be handled, perhaps you’ve thought about running for elected local office.
Now’s your chance.
The cities of Glencoe, Biscay, Brownton, New Auburn, Plato, Silver Lake, Stewart and the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board will have elections for city council/board positions this fall. First day to file an affidavit of candidacy is July 28. The filing period closes Aug. 11.

To PD or not to PD, that is the question Silver Lake is still trying to answer

The Silver Lake City Council has been discussing the future of police services in the city since the departure of former Police Chief RJ Cripps in December 2019.
Over the last six-plus months, the council has advertised and interviewed for a police chief and discussed a merger with the Lester Prairie Police Department.
The council faced another setback when it learned that current full-time police officer Ian Coates accepted a conditional job offer with the city of Glencoe pending the background investigation. He is expected to leave his position with the city by the end of July.

Caribou coming to Coborn’s

People will have another option for getting their caffeine fix and frothy coffee in the area.
Caribou Coffee will make its Glencoe debut late this summer and will feature a seating area along with a drive-thru at Coborn’s at 2211 11th St. E.
Remodeling for this franchise coffee shop was expected to start Tuesday, July 7, and is part of a series of renovations Coborn’s is working on. Caribou Coffee’s construction is expected to finish mid- to late-August and will open its business shortly after that, according to Tony Noga, store director at Coborn’s.

It takes time to figure out rabbits, squirrels and Zoom

I have stopped saying, “I’ve seen it all.” Apparently, I haven’t, especially when it comes to backyard animals like squirrels.
The other day I saw something new again. There was a rabbit and a squirrel, apparently with attitudes. The squirrel approached the rabbit, which would hop off a bit. When the squirrel pursued, the rabbit turned around, jumped in the air and hopped off again.
This went on for some time. The squirrel kept lurching forward, the rabbit kept jumping in the air. Even by my standards, it was weird.

Glencoe group encourages community to get in motion

After months of Minnesota’s stay-at-home order being in place, people may be itching to get outside, enjoy some fresh air and find something to do with friends and family.
“Glencoe in Motion,” a new group, is seeking to help with that. It is an initiative of the city’s downtown revitalization drive.
“We strive to help individuals feel connected, support revitalization of our own downtown area and motivate residents to utilize local resources and amenities to enrich their quality of life,” Glencoe in Motion’s mission statement said.

MnDOT begins districtwide bridge maintenance work

The Minnesota Department of Transportation began a three-week bridge maintenance program in southwest Minnesota this week and will be in the Glencoe area next week.
Travelers may encounter shoulder or lane closures and flagging operations during bridge maintenance work. Short delays are possible. MnDOT is asking drivers to plan accordingly when traveling in the following areas during the month of July.
Inspection crews will be working on the bridge on Highway 212, between Plato and Glencoe approximately on July 14.
