Silver Lake Council approves 5.9 percent preliminary levy increase

Department heads in the City of Silver Lake sharpened their pencils a bit before Monday’s city council meeting.
The city was anticipating a preliminary tax levy increase of just over 7 percent as of a workshop two weeks ago. At its regular meeting Sept. 16, the council approved a preliminary levy of $549,903, a $30,653 or 5.90 percent increase from the 2019 levy.
The city is projecting $913,213 in revenues and expenses in 2020, $47,256 or 5.46 percent over this year.

What are good roads worth? Our view: Half-percent sales tax is worthwhile

There’s a lot of room for discussion on the proposal to enact a ½-percent sales tax increase McLeod County commissioners are considering. Perhaps by the time you read this, the county board will have made a decision on the proposal.
We believe the issue is worthy of approval for three simple reasons: No. 1) People want to drive on good roads that allow them to get where they want to go safely and efficiently. No. 2) McLeod County doesn’t have the money to over the long haul enact No. 2. No. 3) The proposed increase is minimal.
