GSL boys diving into WCC competition against top teams

After a pair of tough losses earlier this month, the GSL boys’ basketball team restored its winning ways, building confidence heading into the conference meat grinder where they will face what is expected to be tougher competition.

Panthers shine in gymnastics victory over HLWW Lakers

As they continue to build toward a season-high performance, the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team enjoyed a solid performance in a big win over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted earlier last week.
The Panthers dominated the competition, posting high scores in all four events. GSL won the meet, 126.6 to 100.4.
GSL posted the top five scores in the vault competition. Makayla Wigern finished at 8.35. Autumn Kaczmarek and Jacey Wischnack both received an 8.3 for their efforts. Emma Peirce finished at 8.2 and Addison Graupmann received an 8.15.

After a solid first half of the season, the competition is about to get a bunch tougher for the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School girls’ basketball team as the Panthers face teams eyeing top spots in the Wright County Conference West.
The Panthers, 3-0 in WCC play, 9-4 overall, faced Litchfield last night, Tuesday, Jan.18, in Glencoe. Litchfield entered the game at 3-1 in WCC play, 9-6.
Details of the game were not available when The Chronicle went to press.

Corey Alan Zarnke, 54, of McEwen, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
A visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 18, 3 to 6 p.m., at Humphreys County Funeral Home. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 18, 6 p.m., in the Humphreys County Funeral Home Chapel in Waverly, Tenn.
Mr. Zarnke’s wishes were for cremation following the service.

Can we find the common good for one and all?

I still remember a question I got years ago. It was at a public meeting in southern Indiana, in one of those squat, featureless cinder-block buildings you find all across the country.
This young woman stood up and commented I’d traveled throughout the U.S. and had met all kinds of people. So she wanted to know: What was my impression of Americans? I didn’t even hesitate: The American people are fundamentally decent, I told her.
I still believe this. And when I say it, I’m not talking about a bare majority. Most Americans are good people.

Keeping schools open, safe – Our view: You can’t have it both ways

There’s no shortage of conversation about school safety in the United States in 2021 and 2022. Within the last month or so, the Glencoe Police Department dedicated two patrol officers to spend time at Glencoe-Silver Lake Junior-Senior High School on a given day thanks to an irresponsibly published social-media post. A patrol car at the school is an increasingly common occurrence.
Despite all their training and hardware, there’s a threat to the safety of students and staff no police officer can quell.

The McLeod County Chronicle’s updated election letter policy

The McLeod County Chronicle is accepting all election-related letters as paid election letters, a policy first announced in the 2020 election.
Any election-related letters to the editor, in support or opposing a candidate or political party, including letters from candidates, will be noted as paid election letters.
Paid election letters will cost $25 for up to 300 words. Letters of more than 300 words will be treated as display advertising and subject to the per column inch rate.
