Why so few handicap cubicles at City Center polls?

To the Editor:
I went to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 6, as did many others at the City Center. We got there around 9:30 a.m. There was not a large crowd at that time.
I am partially handicapped. Standing is not something I’m able to do very much of.
I asked if there was an area or place where I could sit down to vote. I was directed to a cubicle with a chair, and someone was using it at the time. So I waited in line for the person to get done voting.

Veterans Day: ‘God Bless America!’

Nov. 11, 1918, at exactly 11 a.m., representatives of the forces fighting World War I signed the armistice which brought that deadly conflict to an end.
Up until 1954, when the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day, Armistice Day was observed as one of the top holidays in the United States. All schools, most cities and the nation had programs and observances of this important date.

Romney’s our pick to lead the nation for next four years

Going to the polls on Tuesday, Americans will have a stark choice as to who will lead this nation from the White House for the next four years — President Barack Obama, a Democrat, or former Massachuetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican.
Incumbents always have the advantage because they have a track record. But that can be a double-edged sword.
Obama has had four years to lead, and what he has accomplished depends on your political view.

Re-elect Anderson, Savre and Conkel

Often overlooked in the state general elections are the Minnesota judicial races, mainly because most Minnesotans know so little about the candidates — incumbents or challengers.
But there are three local judges on this year’s ballot who deserve another term on the bench.
They include Associate Minnesota Supreme Court Justice G. Barry Anderson, a former Hutchinson city attorney, and two McLeod County District Court judges, Michael Savre and Terrence Conkel, both of Glencoe. Both Savre and Conkel are running unopposed.

Trailblazer Joint Powers Board considers proposed ’13 budget

The Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board had a look at the preliminary 2013 budget Thursday morning, but with a caution from Director Gary Ludwig — it could change based on the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) own budget.
“Trailblazer will finalize its budget after MnDOT establishes its funding levels,” said Ludwig.
MnDOT provides funding of up to 80 percent for two of Trailblazer’s programs.

Planning commission gives blessing, but only on 2-1 vote

The Glencoe Planning and Industrial Commission met last Thursday and swore in its newest member, Wes Olson.
Olson replaces Robert Senst, who resigned earlier this summer.
The only other item on the agenda was a variance request by Jason and Alicia Zehnder to build a garage on their property on Vernon Lane in Glenview Woods.
The variance is for a 26-by-26-foot garage that juts too far into the sideyard setback, which by ordinance is five feet. The request is for a three-foot variance from the ordinance requirement.
