GSL senior earns honor for two sports in same season

Silus honored in football, soccer

He enjoys playing both sports enough that when the coronavirus pandemic created an opportunity to compete in both sports this fall, Damien Silus took advantage.
Along the way, Activities Director Dean Schwirtz confirmed Silus earned an honor nobody before him at GSL him has earned.


In inaugural fall season, GSL trapshooters finish seventh

The GSL trapshooting team finished the season in seventh place in its conference with 14,058 points. Spring Lake Park High finished first with 19,979.50 points and McGregor-Aitkin-Cromwell High finished second with 19,954.50. Overall, this was the GSL’s best season ever. The team had a lot of new shooters and watching them at the first week of practice, trying trapshooting for their very first time, and at the end of the season, looking at their scores, and seeing consistent improvement from day one was amazing, said coach Laurie Dummer.


LaDonna Totman, 87, of Gaylord

LaDonna Marie (LeBrun) Totman, 87, of Gaylord, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Oak Terrace Assisted Living in Gaylord.
A private family graveside service was held Wednesday, Dec. 9, 11 a.m., at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, near Little Falls.
Pastor Dave Sperstad was the officiating clergy.
“Amazing Grace” was the congregational hymn.


James Helmbrecht, 79, of Waite Park

James L. Helmbrecht, 79, of Waite Park, formerly of Hutchinson, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, at his home in Waite Park.
No services will be held.
James Lionell Helmbrecht was born July 31, 1941, in Silver Lake. He was the son of John and Mabel (Kyander) Helmbrecht. James received his education in Silver Lake and was a graduate of the Silver Lake High School Class of 1960.
Mr. Helmbrecht entered active military service in the United States Army May 31, 1960, in Minneapolis. He received an honorable discharge April 30, 1966, at Fort Hamilton, N.Y., and achieved the rank of E4.


Evelyn Michaelis, 82, of Glencoe

Evelyn “Evie” Jelaine (Bening) Michaelis, 82, of Glencoe, passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
A private graveside service was held Friday, Dec. 18, 11 a.m., at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Helen Township, rural Glencoe.
Pastor Adam Pilarski was the officiating clergy.
“What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace” were the hymns.


She believes Trump deserves credit for virus vaccine

To the editor,
Everyone is elated to hear about the vaccine that was developed to suppress the Chinese Communist Party (COVID-19) virus.
A couple from Turkey did just that. Nov. 9, Phizer drug company with its German partner, BioNTech, said its vaccine was 90 percent effective against the virus. The Massachusetts-based firm, Moderna Inc., announced on Nov. 16 its coronavirus virus was 95.5 percent effective.


California-style emissions standards is a ‘terrible idea’

To the editor,
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently announced that, beginning in January, it will begin the process of formally adopting strict California-style vehicle emissions standards.
This is a terrible, terrible, terrible idea.
It was a terrible idea when the governor first announced it in 2019, and it remains a terrible idea now. If the governor feels the need to virtue-signal to environmentalist activists, then that’s fine, but he should not punish Minnesotans in the process.
