Letter - City needs to tighten budget on law enforcement in SL

To the editor,
I’m a citizen of Silver Lake for the last 48 years and have lived in the Silver Lake area my whole 69 years. I can’t believe the council of Silver Lake does not try to save any money for us taxpayers of Silver Lake.
When I tell people from other towns what I pay, about $2,300 in real estate taxes, they say, what? That much is ridiculous. About $1,200 of my taxes goes to the city.

Let me give you a little advice. Don’t believe everything you hear, especially when it involves local property taxes.
Those of us who attended last fall’s truth-in-taxation hearings were told complaints about our double-digit tax increases were too late. We should have taken it up during the initial notices of hearings with the county auditor/assessor in the spring. That’s when you can actually do something about it.
Well, that is not the complete story.

John “Jack” Alvin Splichal, 79, of Glencoe, passed away Monday, June 15, at Woodstone Senior Living in Hutchinson.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, June 19, 1 p.m., at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, with interment following at Glencoe Catholic Cemetery in Glencoe.
The Rev. Anthony Stubeda was the officiating clergy.
Sue Mielke was the pianist and Gus and Irene Makovsky the song leaders.
“Here I Am Lord,” “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Be Not Afraid,” “Song of Farewell” and “Amazing Grace” were the congregational hymns.

Roger Herbert Becker, 80, of New Auburn, passed away Wednesday, May 13, at the family farm in New Auburn.
A drive-thru visitation will be held Saturday, June 27, 1 to 2:30 p.m., at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Auburn. Enter the drive-thru visitation from the north side of the church driving south. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27, 3 p.m., at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Auburn, with interment following at High Island Cemetery in New Auburn.

Orland G. Witte, 85, of Hutchinson, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, June 14, at the Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
A memorial service was held Thursday, June 18, 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton with interment at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Brownton.
The Rev. R. Allan Reed was the officiating clergy.
The Rev. Ken Tatkenhorst was the organist. The duet of Todd and Maria King performed, “Amazing Grace.”

John Edward Shovelin passed away June 13 at Crestview Communities in Blaine.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date.
John Shovelin was born April 1, 1943, in Glencoe. He was the first son to Frank and Lena Shovelin after they had six girls.
