Glencoe residents call for change

A Glencoe native led a rally, a call for an end to racial prejudice, Tuesday, June 2, on the lawn east of the McLeod County Courthouse.
About 150 people, mostly younger people, participated in the rally sparked by the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. They lay on the grass pretending to be handcuffed and struggling to breathe as Floyd was before he died at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue May 25.

Salons, barbershops reopen with state safety precautions

Hairstylists and barbers are hitting the ground running as they’re finally allowed to open business and serve clients after the state relaxed restrictions on their facilities.
“I’m super excited to be back at work,” said Crystal Meuleners, a hairstylist for The Hair Studio. “I love my job, and we’re extremely busy. Luckily, (Hairstylist Tanya Mathews and I) both have good support systems, so we did good. But yeah, it definitely is hard to be closed for so long.”

McLeod County district courts may resume criminal jury trials

The Minnesota Judicial Council approved McLeod, Hennepin, Olmsted and Ramsey counties to begin holding criminal jury trials, as part of a pilot project June 3.
“The right to a trial before a jury of our peers is promised in the U.S. Constitution,” Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie S. Gildea said. “The Minnesota Judicial Branch has implemented detailed safety measures to maintain social distancing, follow guidance from health officials, and ensure that jury trial pilot locations are operating in a safe and responsible manner.”

Glencoe church youth group turning donations into home-cooked generosity

Take leftover donated food, augmented with some additional meat and blend it with a willingness to serve those in need. The recipe is one a group of youth and adults from a Glencoe church is using.
Christian education students and adult volunteers at First Congregational are meeting regularly to prepare food for people in need. The group isn’t limiting its generosity to members of the congregation, said Kari Warner, who works with a group of youth and other members of the church. First Congregational’s members are willing to help anyone they can.

While grades of Glencoe-Silver Lake students are being compiled and recorded, the school board is beginning the assessment of Superintendent Chris Sonju’s performance the past year.
How the directors will reach their conclusions is unknown. The board declined a request for the criteria to be used in the assessment. The measures will be released when the board and its personnel committee announce its conclusions. That announcement is due at the July 13 board meeting.

Minnesota Seventh District: Hughes will challenge Fischbach in GOP primary

Claiming the party system is geared toward political insiders, Dave Hughes has filed candidacy papers to force a Republican Party primary election in the race for Minnesota’s Seventh Congressional District seat.
Hughes is challenging Michelle Fischbach and the GOP. Party delegates selected Fischbach as the best candidate to run against Rep. Collin Peterson, a Democrat who has held the seat since 1991. Hughes is citing “voting issues” that arose during the virtual convention. A poll he commissioned indicates over 70 percent of people surveyed believe the endorsement system was “rigged.”

Stewart City Council talks street maintenance, hires new firefighters

Over the last several years the city of Stewart has spent time and money to improve many of the streets within the city, but the maintenance never ends.
