He has no formal training as a writer, but that didn’t stop Luke Walford from writing a book for children. The Glencoe native has everything needed to enjoy a successful first try as an author.
He had a good idea to base a story on, access to a talented illustrator, solid support, a supportive wife, and oh yes, children. Walford’s first book was a breeze.
He recently completed self-publishing “Ollie’s Snowy Day.” The book is available in printed and digital formats through Amazon.
“I just like to write,” Walford said. “I have no formal training.”

McLeod County Board OKs reducing property tax penalties

During a special meeting last Tuesday, April 28, the McLeod County Board decided to reduce the penalty for late property tax payments.
The decision came after commissioners met to hear feedback and discuss the property tax penalties during the current pandemic.
The board learned at its previous meeting it doesn’t have the authority to change the May 15 first half property tax due date, but it can make changes to the penalties charged for late payments.
The due date can only be changed by state lawmakers. The legislature reportedly isn’t planning on changing the date at this time.

Fischbach wins Seventh District Republican endorsement for the fall

Delegates to Minnesota’s Seventh Congressional District endorsing convention favored former Lt. Gov. Michelle Fischbach to face U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson in November.
“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the Seventh District Republican Party,” said Fischbach. “We’re excited to unify conservatives in western Minnesota and work hard to send President Trump a Republican Majority in the U.S. House. In Congress, I will be a fresh, new voice for the people of western Minnesota and help President Trump rebuild our economy, secure our borders, and keep America safe.”

Sisters are a big part of plans for GSL golf team

On a girls’ golf team with precious little experience, they are young veterans who planned to help the team try and climb the standings in conference play.
And then their season was nixed by the coronavirus.
Ashley and Alyssa Radke joined the golf team a year ago. They had never played the game competitively. They relied on natural athleticism to get started and then improved during the course of the season.

Letter – Writer believes we must keep local control of elections

To the editor,
As we deal with the virus from China, efforts are underway by the State of Minnesota to take over local in-person voting from our local precincts with mandatory 100 percent mail-in voting.
There is no need for the State of Minnesota to seize these added powers. Minnesota laws already allows for liberal no-excuses early voting and mail in balloting options.

Letter – In times of strife, our leaders recognized value of prayer

To the editor,
On March 30, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln called for a National Day of Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer for the end of the Civil War, a time of great distress and death for our nation.
Today, our nation is also facing a time of great distress and death as it struggles against the coronavirus. While the U.S. has done much to battle the virus socially and scientifically, and much progress has been made, humans are ultimately in control of very little in this world.
