GSL gymnasts readying for season competition

The Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers’ Gymnastics team has heart — as individuals and as a team, Kim Hahn said. They have veterans that know the ins and outs of practices and understand competition and know how to be ready for it, which takes heart in itself. But it’s also newcomers to the team that detail the heart of Panthers gymnasts.
“The new girls that come on completely new to the sport — and what it takes to learn the skills, requirements, lingo, what to expect at meets and with judges — and they learn this in a few weeks before their first meet. That takes a lot of heart …” Hahn said.

Girls’ basketball looking forward to tough WCC

With just two weeks in the books for Panthers’ girls basketball players, Head Coach Jeff Monahan said things have been going great for the team so far, especially the last practices of the week last Thursday and Friday.
“I thought Thursday’s and Friday’s practices were really good. The girls are getting sharper and continue to work hard,” Monahan said.

GSL wrestlers setting a course for improvement

If the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team is to make the kind of noise it hopes to make during the regular season and into the section competition, the Panthers will work to improve consistently.
“They’ve been working pretty hard,” said coach Lance Wurm. “I’m excited to see what they can do and how they’ve improved over last year.”
After entering the section meet as the 11th-seeded team, the Panthers weren’t able to advance in the team portion of section competition last year. The coach is hoping the team can earn a top-eight seed this season.

GSL’s Schwirtz named section baseball coach of year

He’s been here before and the honor still means a ton. It’s a sign the GSL baseball coach is surrounded by good players, good coaches and a supportive community.
Schwirtz was recently named the section baseball coach of the year by the Minnesota Baseball Coach’s Association for Section 5AA. It’s the sixth time he’s won the honor since 2007, the most recent coming in 2018. Schwirtz is quick to credit his players, assistant coaches and community volunteers

GSL boys hoops taking new approach

After graduating four of five starters from a year ago, the GSL boys’ hoops team is taking a different approach on offense and sticking with a similar way of doing business on defense.
Last year, GSL finished 15-14 overall. The Panthers were 6-2 against teams in their section and 6-8 against Wright County Conference West competition. They were 4-7 on the road and 9-5 in the friendly confines of GSL.
Rather than rely on outside shooting, Glencoe-Silver Lake will rely on attacking the basket for higher-percentage shots. Defensively, the team will utilize its up-tempo pressure defense.
