Bonderman keeps GSL’s actors looking the part on stage

When the characters in Glencoe-Silver Lake High School’s production of “Newsies” take the stage, Valerie Bonderman’s aim is that all of them at the very least look the part.
That’s her job. The rest is up to them.
Bonderman has been in charge of costumes for GSL’s theater productions for the past nine years. She’s worked with Hutchinson High School’s theater staff for the past eight years. And to think, she owes it all to her unwillingness to move to Virgina.

‘Newsies’
When: Nov. 14-16, 21-23
Curtain: 7 p.m.
Tickets: Available at the door

The 3-pointer – Big shot is an indelible part of basketball today

It has become a staple of modern basketball, a shot that has changed the game so much it’s worth three points.
The three-point arch is at 19-feet-9 inches for high school play. The Minnesota State High School League approved implementation of the three-point shot in 1988. High-schoolers today have never played varsity hoops without it.
“I like it. I think it has changed the game,” said GSL boys’ coach Rob DeCorsey.
The shot’s length varied the first few years.

Glencoe Chamber of Commerce welcomes new leaders for 2020

The Glencoe Chamber of Commerce honored existing members, greeted new members and welcomed new leaders at its annual business meeting and luncheon last Wednesday at Glencoe City Center.
Ana Alexander of Glencoe Regional Health was named the chamber’s 2019 Mike Popelka Chamber Volunteer honoree. She will also be the 2020 chairperson of the chamber board, replacing Chip Anderson of SLS Tax, Accounting Financial Services.

Adelsen promoted to associate pastor at First Ev. Lutheran

The Rev. Peter Adelson, who used to be the assistant pastor at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, had his title lifted and is now the associate pastor at the church. He’s been with the church for just over two years now.
Adelsen considers himself a religious conservative — a person who relies primarily on scripture to derive Biblical interpretation. It frustrates him when religious intellectuals depart from scripture to ascribe their own interpretation, conveniently disincluding some things and keeping others.

Habitat home building in Glencoe a team effort

For some, this is another Habitat for Humanity home-building project, an opportunity to help a local family enjoy home ownership.
Crow River Habitat for Humanity is building a single-family house on North Baldwin Avenue. The house’s owners, Trinity Johnson and Teresa Rannow, are both working for Habitat for Humanity. Johnson spent part of Saturday shingling the house. Rannow is helping the agency with fundraising and office work. Crow River Habitat for Humanity welcomes additional volunteer help on the project.

GSL art teacher wins high school art educator of the year award

To many, it’s no surprise Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) art instructor Shanda Landes won the Art Educators of Minnesota (AEM) High School Art Teacher of the Year award.
Landes was presented the award at the AEM fall conference in Mankato Saturday, Nov. 2. She maybe could’ve won 10 years ago when she was originally nominated for the award, but technical difficulties and a busy schedule got in the way of winning in 2009.

Gabrielle Fountain wins chamber volunteer award

Gabby Fountain, the youth librarian at the Glencoe Public Library, won the Glencoe Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Community Volunteer of the Year Award.
“They always laugh at me because I have a hard time saying no to things,” Fountain said.
Fountain and those around her know that all too well. But she decided a better way of describing it might be that she just loves saying yes.

City Council will consider comp. plan proposal

If the Glencoe City Council decides to move ahead with the creation of a comprehensive plan, it will focus on land use and a community vision for Glencoe as it continues to grow in the years to come.
Last Wednesday, Nov. 6, the Glencoe Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the city council OK a proposal to have SEH, the city’s engineering firm, work on a comprehensive plan in a coordinated fashion with city staff on land uses in Glencoe and the community vision for its future. The proposal is expected to cost as much as $40,000.

Veteran reflects on service in Pacific Theater on Veterans Day

Ninety-five-year-old Army veteran Ed LaMott was overwhelmed with gratitude throughout Veterans Day on Monday. At 69 years of membership, he’s one of the longest standing veterans — if not the longest — of the Silver Lake American Legion.
Although it’s typically a day meant for acknowledging the sacrifice, bravery, patriotism and tribulations America’s veterans endured and thank them for it, LaMott is eager to reciprocate the gratitude.
