Guerrero, Hallaway enjoy solid experience at state cross-country meet

A pair of Glencoe-Silver Lake runners put their best foot forward at the Minnesota State High School League Class A championships Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf College. Running against state-caliber competition, the pair finished their season in style while leaving room for improvement next season.
In the girls’ race, GSL’s Kendall Guerrero finished 90th with a time 20:33.1 — just off last year’s time of 20:16.8. In the boys’ race, Connor Hallaway finished 85th with a time of 17:21.1.

Tim Orth Foundation ‘Jam the Gym’ dates set

The Tim Orth Memorial Foundation (TOMF) is a non-profit located at Lake Lillian, Minn., whose mission is to assist children (birth to age 18), financially or otherwise, in the West Central Minnesota area who are facing substantial medical expenses incurred as a result of a serious accident or illness. TOMF is an organization run completely by volunteers and funded solely by donations.

With CWD in sights, deer hunting meets disease prevention

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a contagious neurodegenerative disease spreading throughout Minnesota’s whitetail deer population, impacting hunters across the state. Hunters can help mitigate the disease by doing what they do best: hunting.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) website says reducing the population of deer helps minimize the spread of disease because the fewer the deer, the less deer-to-deer contact. Reducing the amount of contact between deer means reducing the risk of sick deer transmitting CWD to healthy deer.

Voters approve GSL’s levy request

Voters in the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District approved by a solid majority a request to replace an outgoing operating levy with a new operating levy high enough to trigger additional aid from the state.
The school district’s request for additional money passed Tuesday 1,130 to 741 (60.4% in favor of the request to 39.6% opposed).
“I’m just happy it passed, for our students, our administrators and our staff,” said Director Alicia Luckhardt. “Our supporters were out there and they chose to vote.”

‘Old Warriors’ – Book aims to keep memories alive, help Legion raise money

They were boys, really, barely old enough in many cases to enjoy a beer or stay out late with their dad’s car on a Saturday night. Today, the memory of these ‘old warriors’ is fading as they pass on.
These are the men who came from the cities large and small, the farms, to fight for their country in World War II.

Of the $10 million, $6 million is designated for road construction and $4 million will go to the McLeod County Government Center renovation (the former Jungclaus building).

Peterson one of two Democrats to oppose impeachment rules, inquiry

In a rebuke to his own party, Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., was one of only two democrats to vote against formal proceedings and setting rules of an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.
Peterson represents Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District — the largest geographical district in Minnesota, sprawling across nearly the entire western portion of the state. It includes Glencoe, Brownton, Silver Lake, Plato and Biscay.

Central storm project down to punch list items

After nearly two years of necessary inconvenience for residents impacted by Glencoe’s $6.7 million central storm sewer project, the project has come down to punch-list items the city expects will be completed next spring.
Monday, Nov. 4, the city council reviewed a partial list of items that must be completed by the end of June before the city’s final acceptance of the project. The city’s contract with R & R Excavating expires in June.
The partial list of seven punch list items includes:

Letter to editor – Ag Secretary Purdue’s comment: Where’s the outcry?

To the editor,
Why is it that our rural newspaper appears to have the lack of interest in agriculture to not comment on U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue’s comments, whereas the Minneapolis Tribune on Oct. 5 titled an article: "Perdue to farmers: Go big or just go.”
This lack of notice in our newspaper and no response from our farmers shows the plight of our ag industry. This lack of interest is not new; Earl Butz, secretary of agriculture back in the ‘70s, said the same thing by stating: “Farmers must get big or get out” with little or no outcry from our farmers or the press.
