Boys cross-country takes 13th at Litchfield Invitational

Panther boys runners were at it again in Litchfield on Thursday, Oct. 3 on a day that averaged in the lower 50s for temperatures, along with fairly wet running conditions. GSL finished 13th among 21 teams.
Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers boys cross-country Head Coach Jeff Delwiche said cold isn’t nearly as big of a problem — if any problem at all, as long as it doesn’t get too cold — for runners battling weather conditions.

Panthers’ girls finish 7th among 30 teams in Duluth Invitational

The Panthers’ girls cross-country team finished seventh among a grand total of 30 teams at the highly-revered Swain Invitational in Duluth on Saturday, Oct. 5. The girls team didn’t run at the Litchfield Invitational a few days before so they were prepared and fresh for this meet.

Panthers grind out a gridiron win over New London-Spicer

With its typical ball-control ground attack, the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers ground out a big win over New London-Spicer Friday night, Oct. 7.
The Panthers topped the Wildcats, 14-6, with two first-half touchdowns and a defense that limited the host team to only one score in the second half. GSL’s first half offense included a pair of big plays along with the typical ground game. The Panthers amassed 196 yards of rushing and 49 yards of passing in the victory.

Volleyball team splits a pair

It’s not exactly supposed to work out this way. The GSL volleyball team enjoyed a nice win on the road over Mound Westonka and dropped a gut-wrenching five-set match at home to New London-Spicer before making the final turn to the regular season home stretch last night, Tuesday, Oct. 8, against Litchfield.

Glencoe weighing company’s request for tax abatement – Miller Manufacturing wants help with expansion plans

With an eye toward potentially helping Miller Manufacturing’s plans for expansion, the Glencoe City Council is considering a proposal to help the company with tax abatement.
The council voted unanimously to schedule a public hearing for Oct. 21, 7 p.m., on the company’s request for $250,000 in property taxes over 15 years, whichever comes first. Miller Manufacturing is requesting the abatement to help fund soil corrections and site preparation associated with the construction of a 37,200-square-foot warehouse addition.

She enjoys strolling the hallways and bituminous walking paths at Grand Meadows for exercise and visiting with friends and neighbors. It all keeps Betty Knick vibrant, feeling good and looking forward to everyday life.
That’s what makes life worthwhile for Glencoe’s latest centenarian.
Betty and over 40 relatives and friends celebrated the milestone event at a Glencoe restaurant. She was the star of the show, the center of attention. Visiting with people, chatting and sharing good conversation are among her favorite pastimes. She enjoys watching ballgames and playing games.

Tri-Valley’s center manager looking to life’s next chapter

When she took the job four years ago managing Tri-Valley’s Opportunity Council’s Head Start facility on the Christ Lutheran campus in Glencoe, increasing the public’s awareness of the center and preparing for the construction of a new facility were among the top of Eliza Tobon’s agenda.
Four years later, mission accomplished.

Foundation created to address opportunities for improvement

Glencoe has a new resource to respond to needs and opportunities in the community. The Glencoe Area Community Foundation was recently formed in partnership with Southwest Initiative Foundation and will work on fundraising, grant-making and educating the community about the local foundation’s mission and vision.
Inaugural advisory board members are chairperson Rachel Schuette, vice chairperson Sharon Hoese, treasurer Kelly Rach, secretary Amanda Ortloff, Lennie Albers, Myranda VanDamme, Lynn Exsted and Craig Miller.

County buys armored vehicle, OKs fiber optic, subcontractors for new government center project

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners gave the OK on the purchase of a tactical armored police vehicle for $244,639 Tuesday morning, Oct. 8.
It will replace what McLeod County Sheriff Scott Rehmann described as an antiquated and unreliable model that can’t be trusted in a crisis situation.
Commissioner Paul Wright spoke to the “unfortunate” situation the county has been put in — that commissioners feel it’s necessary to purchase a nearly quarter-million dollar armored vehicle to keep sheriff’s deputies and city police officers safe.

Silver Lake Council looks at utility rate hike

The Silver Lake City Council reviewed the 2020 city fee schedule. On the list is a proposed water, sewer and storm sewer rate increase at its quarterly meeting Monday night, Oct. 7.
The base rates for water and sewer currently proposed would increase nearly 30 percent from $9.25 to $12 per month. Water usage charge is proposed to increase from $5 per 1,000 gallons to $7 per month. Sewer usage charge is proposed to increase from $7 per 1,000 gallons to $9 per month.
