Walz comes to Glencoe to sign biofuels order

Glencoe area farmer Brian Thalmann welcomed Gov. Tim Walz to his farm Monday afternoon. Walz was at the farm to announce the formation of a biofuels council intended to help farmers like Thalmann.

Colorful crosswalks and barrels

GSL graduate Abby Shmieg was among dozens of volunteers and members of a Glencoe downtown revitalization subcommittee brought color to refuse containers to be placed around downtown and crosswalks at the intersection of North Greeley Avenue and East 11th Street Saturday, Sept. 14. The project was a part of the downtown beautification project.

Panthers take the fire out of Dragons

Tennis swept twice

It was another difficult week for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team as the Panthers were swept in three of their matches last week and rained out in another.
GSL was out on the road to begin the week with a trip to Litchfield on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Dragons proved to be rude hosts, defeating the visitors 7-0 without allowing a single set victory.

Soccer tops Hutch

Stevens Seminary Stadium hosted a jubilant home side on Tuesday, Sept. 10, as the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team claimed its biggest victory of the season with a 4-3 defeat of neighboring rival Hutchinson.
The Panthers took a 3-1 halftime lead and held on against second-half rally from the Tigers to secure the one-goal win.
Attackers Miranda Litzau and Lydia Simons each scored two goals, with Litzau adding an assist in the triumph. Midfielder Mariana Castillo also added a pair of assists, while goalkeeper Morgan Verdeck logged 11 saves.

Panthers take the fire out of Dragons

Impressive displays on both sides of the ball buoyed the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team to a 21-14 victory over Litchfield at Stevens Seminary Stadium on Friday, Sept. 13.
The Panthers gritted out a throwback-style win with 337 rushing yards with just one pass attempt in the game, while the GSL defense held the Dragons scoreless on their only second-half possession en route to the triumph.

Spikers 2nd in St. Peter

A 3-2 appearance in the St. Peter Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14, combined with a split of two midweek games gave the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team a 6-5 record entering this week.
GSL opened last week with a less-than-ideal trip to Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Panthers were overwhelmed by the Crusaders, losing 25-20, 25-12, 25-15. Individual statistics were not made available.

Cross-country teams host meet Thursday

The Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country teams made their second trip to Baylor Park in Young America last week, competing in the Norwood Young America Lions Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
The Panther girls’ squad placed third out of 14 teams, while the boys’ team was eighth out of 15 teams in their respective races.
Malayh Metcalf and Kendall Guerrero finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 21 minutes, 2.3 seconds, and 21:06.2, to lead GSL to the third-place finish with 99 points.
