Panthers mauled by Huskies in gridiron opener

The GSL defense had a busy night against an aggressive Albany offense. Jacob Schuch (46) and Zach Voelz (6) teamed up to stifle this particular Huskies rushing attempt.

100 years old and still cruisin’

Glencoe centenarian Mickey Beltz wanted to enjoy a motorcycle ride with her granddaughter Chris Bargmann during her recent visit from Buckland, Mass. Bargmann, 39, gave her grandmother a ride with a few stops around Glencoe last month. Beltz, who has enjoyed motorcycle rides before, will turn 101 in December.

Glencoe Airport fly-in hosted many for corn, aviation

The Glencoe Municipal Airport hosted yet another fly-in and corn feed where pilots and spectators came together for a day of food and aviation. The event included a visit to the airport by Life Link air ambulance's Skylar Stevenson, flight paramedic Phil Nicolas and flight nurse Doug Schlangen. Youngsters Oliver, 6, and Ezra Palmquist, 2, look into the cockpit of an airplane with their dad, Shane Palmquist.

Panthers cheerleading squad whoops up the home crowd

The Glencoe-Silver Lake cheerleading team pepped up the home crowd during the Panthers’ 40-7 loss to visiting Albany on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Stevens Seminary Stadium. It was the first appearance of the season for this year’s GSL football cheerleaders.

A safety-minded donation

The Glencoe Lions recently donated funds to allow the city to install two portable speed signs. The signs are currently on County Road 2 (Hennepin Avenue) and the other on Highway 22 near the city limits. The signs will be moved to keep up with requests from citizens and neighborhood groups. County board talks preliminary levy in workshop

McLeod County commissioners and staff met in a workshop after a Sept. 3 board meeting and discussed the potential preliminary budget figures for 2020.
Auditor-treasurer’s office accountant Colleen Robeck supplied bundles of information regarding the budget for commissioners and staff. The proposed preliminary budget for 2020, which is subject to change, is 15.91 percent.

The orderly manner in which they are aligned is a sign the three-dozen or so wagons in the front yard of the Weber family’s yard at the corner of Morningside Drive and East First Street is not a case of blight or of children’s’ toys left astray.
The wagons are a tribute, homage to a man’s life and his commitment to his family.

County board names Murphy to top job

The McLeod County Board chose Sheila Murphy — previously the interim and deputy administrator — to lead all county departments as the administrator Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Commissioners didn’t spend much time discussing her appointment at the board meeting yesterday morning as commissioners unanimously approved the motion other than Commissioner Rich Pohlmeier endorsing the decision. Commissioners and department heads had their opportunities for input during the interview process, which lasted months. The former administrator, Cindy Ford, retired in May.

MCA results show growth, challenges for GSL Schools

While there is room for improvement, Glencoe-Silver Lake students who took the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments III last spring performed on par with their statewide counterparts and displayed some areas of success and improvement over previous years.
Results released Wednesday, Aug. 28, show GSL students are falling short or keeping pace with their counterparts statewide when it comes to exceeding the standards on MCA III exams in math, science and reading. GSL students are comparatively performing better when it comes to meeting or partially meeting state standards on the exams.
