Silver Lake Council asks staff to cut $40,000 from 2016 budget

The Silver Lake City Council took its first look at the 2016 city budget and asked the administration and department heads to make some cuts at its regular meeting on Monday, July 20.
 
The budget show expenses and revenue of $782,129, a 10.19 percent increase over the 2015 budget.
 
At that amount, the 2016 tax levy would increase 5.18 percent to $496,437.90.
 

Stewart City Council to review fire service contract language

The Stewart City Council is meeting in special session tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. to discuss its fire protection contract with area townships.
 
Following that meeting, the Council will meet jointly with officials from the townships it serves. That meeting is set for 7 p.m.
 

Bird Island man dies in accident near Hector

On Friday, July 17, at 3:04 p.m., the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call reporting a two vehicle crash at the intersection of 850th Avenue and 510th Street in Brookfield Township. The crash was located approximately seven miles northeast of Hector.
 

23 Brownton seniors met on Monday

Twenty-three Brownton senior citizens met Monday, July 20, at the Brownton Community Center.
 
Cards were played after the meeting with the following winners — 500, Audrey Tongen, first, and Carol Brelje, second; pinochle, Ruby Streich, first, and Archie Diehn, second; and sheephead, Elmer Maass, first, and Lowell Brelje, second.
 
Rita Plendl won the door prize. Carol Brelje served refreshments.
 

Boy born to Vasek family

Beau and Mariah Vasek of Glencoe announce the birth of their son, Warren Randall Vasek, born July 4, 2015, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Warren weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces, and was 21 inches long. He joins brother Owen, 4. Grandparents are Michael and Peggy Kinzler of Glencoe and Randy and Julie Vasek of Silver Lake. Great-grandparents are Bob and Val Shamla of Silver Lake, Duane Rokala of Hutchinson, Len and Elaine Bray of Annandale and Marvin and Marde Kinzler of Willmar.  

Clines welcome baby boy

Nicholas and Rachel Cline of Kenyon announce the birth of their son, Jaxson Graham Cline, born June 28, 2015 at the District 1 Hospital in Faribault. Jaxson weighed 9 pounds, 5 ounces, and was 201⁄2 inches long. Grandparents are Lawson and Mary Cline of Glencoe and Ronald and Rena Lehman of LeSueur. 

U of M dean’s list released

Miranda Berry of Brownton, Kaylee Kruschke and Taylor Mohr of Glencoe, Zachery Jones of Silver Lake and Cole Myers of Stewart were named to the 2015 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a GPA  of 3.66 or higher. 

Strasmann is lottery winner

Roy Strasmann of Lester Prairie won $15,000 playing the Lottery’s Cash Fireworks Scratch Game. Strasmann claimed the prize on July 9. The winning ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store, 282 Babcock Ave. S. in Lester Prairie. 

Winsted resident wins big

Debra Thompson of Winsted won $100,000 from the Lottery’s All or Nothing game on June 28. Her ticket matched all 12 winning numbers from the drawing.  Players win top prize by either matching all winning numbers or none. Thompson purchased the wining ticket at the Holiday Stationstores, Inc., at 240 W. Highway 5 in Waconia. 

U of M Duluth graduates

Adam Broderius of Glencoe and Michael Hahn of Brownton graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth on May 16. Broderius earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering and industrial engineering. Hahn earned a bachelor of accounting summa cum laude with departmental honors.
