Many Winsted residents and two Winsted Township Board members voiced displeasure with a proposed one-megawatt solar garden proposed to be constructed in Winsted Township at a McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission (PAC) meeting Wednesday, July 24. They remember the staircase to a second floor lost to a fire in the mid-1980s, home football games, the spring day in the mid-1970s when a senior rode his motorcycle through the school and the good times they shared with friends throughout the decades.

Glencoe man looking forward to Sibley County Fair Demo Derby Sunday

He’ll spend untold amount of time online searching for the right car, drive to South Dakota or Nebraska to bring it home, commit dozens and dozens of hours preparing the vehicle to potentially be transformed into a twisted heap of steel in about 20 minutes.
On the surface, Mark Lindemann admits, demolition derby makes no sense whatsoever. Then again, he’s more interested in crashing cars than spreadsheets. Sunday, Aug. 4, 1:30 p.m., he’ll be competing in the Sibley County Fair’s demo derby at the fairgrounds in Arlington.
“It’s an expensive hobby, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Man returns home to find ‘odds’ came true

Gary Bennett, who lives off Highway 7 in Silver Lake, was on the receiving end of damages to his property due to a tornado that touched down Sunday, July 28.

He was in Brainerd visiting with friends over the weekend when the tornado hit. Bennett was on his way back to his house in Silver Lake when he got a phone call from a concerned friend asking if his property was impacted by the storm.

It’s not the parade or a lip-synch contest but rather clean fun associated closely with Silver Lake.
Try toilet bowl racing.

Polka music, kolaches mark 50 years of Pola-Czesky Days

The City of Silver Lake this weekend, Aug. 2-4, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pola-Czesky Days — an annual event that highlights the town’s rich Polish and Czech roots.
Activities and attractions have come and gone while some things haven’t changed throughout the years. As many reflect on the event that celebrates the town’s shared culture, it’s hard to overlook the volunteerism and pride surrounding it.
