GSL School Board looks at ‘digital’ snow days

Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Superintendent Chris Sonju’s report at the School Board meeting Feb. 9 prompted an extensive discussion regarding the idea of “digital day.”
Digital day is a concept that other Minnesota schools are using to conduct class online when there is a snow day.  GSL has taken surveys with the staff and researched how other schools have accomplished this. When the plan is ready, it will be brought to the school board on March 9 for approval.

Panthers continue winning ways

A five-game winning streak, including a defeat of this year’s main Wright County Conference West rival Annandale, has the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team on the precipice of at least sharing this year’s conference championship.
“We’re playing pretty well and feeling good,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “But we can’t overlook these last two games.”

GSL grapplers claim final team win

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team claimed its final win as a full squad before bowing out of the Section 2AA tournament on Friday, Feb. 13.  
After topping No. 11 seed Mankato East, 51-24 in the sectional opener, the sixth-seeded Panthers fell to Waconia, the No. 3 seed and host, 56-12 in the second round.

Gymnastics season ends at sectionals

A season full of improvement came to an end for the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team on Friday, Feb. 13 with one last competition – the Section 2A meet in New Prague. 

Girls hoopsters fall at Annandale

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team dropped its lone game last week, 59-44, at Annandale. With the setback, the Panthers fell to 13-9 overall and 2-4 in the Wright County Conference West. 
“(Annandale) came out and executed their game plan well,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “They are a strong team who I feel will win out their section and make a good push for state.”

Glencoe City Council to meet Tuesday

Because of the Presidents Day holiday Monday, the Glencoe City Council will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m., and will consider several agenda items, including a variance request from Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) to exceed height requirements on a new feed mill it is considering constructing; an update on the Denny's Barber Shop building, approval of cemetery board and library board members, a discussion of single-sort recycling, an update on the search for a new executive director for the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce, Highway 212 funding, and more.

County Board to consider 5-year highway plan

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners will consider a new five-year highway plan at its Feb. 17 meeting. The plan will cover the construction years of 2015 through 2019.

The board also will consider authorizing the letting o bids for the 2015 summer highway projects.

Also on the agenda will be a request to authorize the advertising of bids for the proposed jail renovation and courthouse security project, among several items.

The meeting is set for Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 9 a.m., in the commissioners' room in the lower level of the courthouse.
