Villager Apartments closed, owners work to reopen

The Villager Apartments in Silver Lake were closed Wednesday, May 15, for failure to comply with the city’s multi-unit rental ordinance.
The city council, in a special meeting May 6, revoked the multi-unit rental license for the property giving the owner until May 15 to evacuate anyone living on the premises.
Property manager Mike Jaunich has reapplied for a rental license and has been working with the city officials to comply with the occupancy requirements.


Volunteers sought for city garden maintenance

If you or your group enjoy gardening and would like to give back to the community, volunteers are being sought to care for gardens at municipal parks in the area.

Kat Cohrs receives ‘lifetime membership’ honor from Girl Scouts

Kat Cohrs of Norwood Young America received a Lifetime Membership award and bridged to adult Girl Scouts Tuesday, May 14.
Cohrs, the daughter of Terri and Jeremy Cohrs, was presented the award at the annual Girl Scouts’ award ceremony at Oak Leaf Park in Glencoe. She is a senior at Central High School in Norwood Young America.
Gerri Fitzloff, current service unit manager and other leaders from McLeod South Service Unit were present, as were many current Girl Scouts.

The words on the Western Union telegram informing Marcella Rozeski of her husband’s death are burned into her memory. It’s been over 66 years since she read those words on the telegram a Red Cross worker brought to her husband’s family farm.
Marcella Matousek – her married name after remarrying eight years after Francis Rozeski was killed in combat -- will be among the many Americans remembering the nation’s men and women who died while serving their country on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. She knows the meaning of Memorial Day.


Protecting an investment - Glencoe City Council begins work on crack-sealing streets, municipal parking lots

Aiming to project the investment it made in street reconstruction in 2014, the city council gave the go-ahead to a crack-sealing plan intended as maintenance on those streets. The council voted unanimously Monday, May 20 in favor of a supplemental agreement with SEH Inc. for engineering services related to crack sealing streets and parking lots the city rebuilt five years ago.


County board picks Murphy as interim administrator

As McLeod County Administrator Cindy Ford prepares for retirement, the county board appointed Deputy Administrator Sheila Murphy as the county’s interim administrator, effective June 3, until a permanent replacement is found.
Commissioners did not discuss at Tuesday’s, May 21, board meeting the range of Murphy’s additional duties as interim administrator. She will be receiving a $300 increase in monthly salary to compensate for the additional responsibilities. Murphy has been with the county since September 2017 and earns an annual salary of $102,898.

We spent the last week watching Republicans and DFLers engaging in blow hardy hyperbole regarding the steps needed to reach a biennial budget for the state.
Some might call Gov. Tim Walz and his DFL bobos a bunch of tax-and-spend liberals. Some will make the argument the GOP-controlled Senate rewrote the book on obstructionism. In the end, besides a lot of hot air, neither the Republicans or the DFLers got everything they wanted and had to accept less than they promised heading into the session earlier this year. It is what we call compromise.


You won’t find relaxation at the grocery store

I licked my fingers and tried again. The first attempt to open the new plastic bag in order to fill it with apples was, well, fruitless.
I couldn’t open the dang plastic bag! Yes, I checked. It was the right end, because it told me so on the bag.
As much as I tried, that blankety-blank bag stayed stuck together. I was running out of saliva and my finger tips were cleaner than the rest of my hand.
Argh!


Luella Hahn, 97, of Hutchinson

Luella Hahn, 97, of Hutchinson, formerly of Stewart, passed away Wednesday, May 15, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
A funeral service was held Saturday, May 18, 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart, with Pastor Mahlon Bekedam officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery.
Casket-bearers were Erin Keith, Brett Klabunde, Clint Kalenberg, Korey Klammer, Ryan Zeman and Shannon Kottke.
