City council takes itself out of dangerous dog appeals

Following a public hearing, the second reading of a dangerous dog ordinance was approved by Glencoe City Council on Monday.
The aim is to amend the existing ordinance. The amendment would require the police chief to name a third, independent party to act as a judge in cases involving an appeal of the city labeling a canine as a dangerous dog.
An ordinance change requires three readings.
City Attorney Mark Ostlund said the current way of handling dangerous dog appeals puts council members and public appointees “in a tough position” of being both prosecutors and judges.

Couple’s daughters support parents’ service in Army National Guard

As much as they don’t like saying goodbye, seeing their mom and dad in a military uniform heading out the door and supporting mom and dad’s service to sometimes for weeks or months at a time, is normal for Aerianna and Makayla Carrigan. They’ve grown accustomed to one or both parents’ military service taking them from home.

School board OKs abatement bonds parking lot project

With no displayed resistance from taxpayers Monday, April 15, the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board unanimously approved plans to sell general obligation tax-abatement bonds to fund improvements to parking lots at the junior-senior high school and Lakeside Elementary School.

GSL places two teams in state’s Knowledge Bowl top 10

After weeks of practice intermingled with other activities, the members of the Glencoe-Silver Lake Knowledge Bowl team earned two top-10 finishes at the state meet last weekend near Brainerd.
The two teams reached the state meet via solid performances at the region competition March 6. The teams had waited and practiced for almost five weeks.

LaPlante wins state speech title

GSL junior Anthony LaPlante made the most of his first trip to the Minnesota Class A State Speech Tournament Friday at Wayzata High School. He won a state championship.
LaPlante headlined the GSL contingent. He and senior Leah Bettcher both competed in extemporaneous reading from “A Sound of Thunder and Other Stories,” by Ray Bradbury. Bettcher finished tied for fourth but settled for fifth in a tiebreaker. As a team, GSL’s four contestants finished 11th of the 92 schools represented in the competition.

From the weather to streets, things seem just a little out of balance this spring

Last week I saw a squirrel wrestling with a stick. Yes, a stick.
And, believe it or not, it looked like the stick was winning.
Before you think I’m crazy, I called my wife and son to the back window to look, too. They were rather amazed, and as amused as I was as the squirrel lay on its back, feet entangled with a small branch that had blown off in the gale-forced winds we had with the recent snow storm.

Letter to editor: Decision to cancel blood drive was an easy call

To the editor,
The first 2019 blood drive was scheduled to be held Wednesday, April 10, from 1 to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross set our goal at 106 units. The ARC staff usually arrives before 11:30 a.m. for setup and departs after 8 p.m., after the final donors have been processed. But “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” (saying adapted from a line in “To a Mouse,” by Robert Burns).
No matter how carefully a project is planned, sometimes something may still go wrong with it.

Letter to editor: Help for dairy famers might be too little, too late

To the editor,
Ronald Reagan so eloquently said: “The most terrifying words in the English language are: I am from the government and I’m here to help.”

Good legislation – Our view: This should be the norm

Congratulations to Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, Rep. Frank Hornstein, DFL-Minneapolis, and all the lawmakers in the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives. The so-called hands-free bill making it illegal to drive a vehicle while holding a cell phone is a solid piece of bipartisan legislation. It seems well-crafted and reasonable.
The House and Senate passed versions of the bill. A conference committee ironed out the differences between the two bills and Gov. Tim Walz signed the bill into law. It goes into effect Aug. 1.
