Following a public hearing, the second reading of a dangerous dog ordinance was approved by Glencoe City Council on Monday.
The aim is to amend the existing ordinance. The amendment would require the police chief to name a third, independent party to act as a judge in cases involving an appeal of the city labeling a canine as a dangerous dog.
An ordinance change requires three readings.
City Attorney Mark Ostlund said the current way of handling dangerous dog appeals puts council members and public appointees “in a tough position” of being both prosecutors and judges.

With no displayed resistance from taxpayers Monday, April 15, the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board unanimously approved plans to sell general obligation tax-abatement bonds to fund improvements to parking lots at the junior-senior high school and Lakeside Elementary School.

GSL junior Anthony LaPlante made the most of his first trip to the Minnesota Class A State Speech Tournament Friday at Wayzata High School. He won a state championship.
LaPlante headlined the GSL contingent. He and senior Leah Bettcher both competed in extemporaneous reading from “A Sound of Thunder and Other Stories,” by Ray Bradbury. Bettcher finished tied for fourth but settled for fifth in a tiebreaker. As a team, GSL’s four contestants finished 11th of the 92 schools represented in the competition.

The first 2019 blood drive was scheduled to be held Wednesday, April 10, from 1 to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross set our goal at 106 units. The ARC staff usually arrives before 11:30 a.m. for setup and departs after 8 p.m., after the final donors have been processed. But “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” (saying adapted from a line in “To a Mouse,” by Robert Burns).
No matter how carefully a project is planned, sometimes something may still go wrong with it.

Congratulations to Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, Rep. Frank Hornstein, DFL-Minneapolis, and all the lawmakers in the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives. The so-called hands-free bill making it illegal to drive a vehicle while holding a cell phone is a solid piece of bipartisan legislation. It seems well-crafted and reasonable.
The House and Senate passed versions of the bill. A conference committee ironed out the differences between the two bills and Gov. Tim Walz signed the bill into law. It goes into effect Aug. 1.
