‘SuperShelf’ aims to help food shelf users eat, feel better
When she joined the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf in 2013, Lennie Albers noted the shelving that held food items for food shelf users. They were old, rusty in places and looked more like shelving for hardware items than food.
“Most of what we had was very, very inexpensive. We were on a very, very tight budget,” Albers said. “We got by on a wing and a prayer.”
Now as the food shelf’s director, Albers and the team of volunteers are guiding the organization into the SuperShelf program, an initiative supported by HealthPartners, the University of Minnesota, The Food Group and Valley Outreach. The SuperShelf program works to create partnerships, transforming food shelves to provide welcoming and respectful environments to access healthy food.
