Burr takes 2nd at NYA
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Tori Burr is already off to a great start for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ cross country team, with a pair of top-10 finishes in the first two meets. Burr took second place at the Norwood Young America meet held at Baylor Park with a time of 15:39. She finished just nine seconds behind Waconia’s Alexis Willems, who came in at 15:30. With a little less competition and a familiar course, Burr’s time differential between Montgomery and NYA was nearly a minute faster (16:21). Burr wasn’t the only one to improve. Jenny Illg broke 18 minutes with a time of 17:59 and earned a ribbon for her efforts. All the varsity runners improved greatly from Montgomery, as girls took 10th place out of 15 teams. “All of the JV and varsity girls were focused to run their best during the entire meet,” head coach Jann Savre said. “It was great to see their efforts pay off with improved times, and we would like to continue this trend as the season continues.” The home meet for both the boys’ and the girls’ teams is Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m., following a K6 fun run. Both teams then travel to Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a Wright County Conference showdown with the Chargers starting at 4 p.m. Results from NYA: 2.Tori Burr 15:39.7 38.Jenny Illg 17:59.2 42.Kaylee Venier 18:15.4 60.Erica Hecksel 18:55.9 76.Kirsten Barrot 19:27.9 84.Robin Swift 20:06.9 87.Tarin Michaelis 20:29.7

By Josh Randt Sports Editor Down 14-12 to the Annandale Cardinals at halftime, the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers decided it was time for some power football in the second half. Senior fullback Dalton Clouse had about 80 rushing yards in the first half alone. By game’s end, the captain had 239 yards, and two touchdowns as the Panthers rolled over the Cardinals, 4828. Clouse set the tempo early in the second half, when he burst up the middle for a 55-yard touchdown run on his second touch. With a steady dose of Clouse in the mix, the defense started to key in on the fullback, which made the job easier for GSL’s other offensive weapons. “Coach just said we needed to start playing Panther football,” Clouse said of the team’s halftime adjustments. “Smashmouth football, that’s what we’re about. Go up the middle and hit hard. We couldn’t spread it out anymore, because they were shutting that down.” The captain even generated a spark on defense, earning a sack while Annandale was driving early in the fourth quarter. “He’s a three-year starter for us, and our whole offense revolves around him and Keaton (Anderson),” head coach Scott Tschimperle said. “That was the most carries I think a back has ever had for us.” One big reason Clouse had such a field day was the play of the offensive line. “Our offensive line did a phenomenal job blocking,” Tschimperle said. “Dalton had a big game, but he wouldn’t have, had our offensive line not played as well as they did in the second half.” “I couldn’t have scored any of those

Lady Panthers notch first win of the season
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Lady Panthers hopefully got the monkey off their back after beating the White Hawks from Mound-Westonka in three sets on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The win is a first for Glencoe-Silver Lake this year, which started out 0-3 despite winning the first set of every one of those games. The Lady Panthers looked quite pleased with their performance on Tuesday, but they know now is not the time to let up. “It feels really good; it’s a big relief to get that first win,” Lexi Kerslake said with a sigh of relief. “We have to keep moving forward. We have one win now, so we know how it feels to win, and we know how it feels to lose, and it feels a lot better to win. We have a little bit more fight in us now.” The Panthers traveled to Montevideo this past weekend and notched a couple victories, as well as a fifth-place finish, despite losing in four sets to conference opponent Dassel-Cokato on Thursday. GSL won in two sets against Paynesville, 25-19 and 25-16, as Steph Klockmann had a monstrous game with six solo blocks and nine kills. Wabasso won two hard fought sets, and edged the Panthers 25-23, 25-23. GSL then split sets with Lakeview, winning the first 25-23, and barely losing the second 25-22. Klockmann and Kerslake led the Panthers over Montevideo for fifth place, as the pair tallied a total of five blocks and 14 kills. Taylor Novak saw plenty of action, accruing 46 digs over the tournament. Head coach Lori Schwirtz is happy her girls are constantly hanging in there, but said this young team needs to get fired up and ready to play for every game. “The girls did play well, but not like the fire we had for DC,” she said. “Once again, the losses prove to be

Boys’ soccer gets new blood
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ soccer team welcomed some new members to the team this past week, which should improve the team’s scoring chances with fresh legs on the field. Seniors Aaron Berdt and Lou Iacona, along with sophomore Mark Luedens, give the Panthers an opportunity to sub players more frequently, something they were hardly able to do before. “Now we have substitutions, and players will be able to get a rest when they need it,” head coach Jeff Shults said. “Those new players also have a lot to contribute to the team performance during games and practices.” GSL is also giving sophomore Spencer Lund an opportunity to play goalie, which frees up Kyle Beck and Aaron Rhodes to help out elsewhere. Despite the lineup changes, the Panthers still have yet to win a game this season. Last week, they dropped games to Mayer Lutheran and Orono, allowing 16 goals in the two-game stretch. The second half of the season for the Panthers starts this week, as they travel to Mound-Westonka on Tuesday. GSL then has a rematch with Chain of Lakes Soccer Club on Thursday at Paynesville High School before hosting Delano on Monday. All games are at 7 p.m.

Important week for Panther tennis
By Josh Randt Sports Editor It’s a big week for the Panther varsity tennis team, facing a pair of conference opponents with seeding implications for sections on the line. Glencoe-Silver Lake’s record in the Wright County Conference improved to 3-3, after losing last week to Holy Family 7-0, and edging Litchfield 4-3. GSL is coming off a tough weekend where it didn’t win a single match at the Hutchinson Invitational, and lost to Melrose 6-1 on Saturday. The Panthers did, however, defeat Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 5-2, which head coach Robb DeCorsey was pleased with. GSL is behind Providence Academy and Holy Family in section seedings, and will need a win this week in order to maintain the current ranking. The Panthers host Hutchinson and New LondonSpicer this week, both conference opponents. “The big one now is to take care of business on Thursday with New London,” Arnold said. “Even though we’ve lost, you can tell that the girls are playing a lot better than if they were playing against someone that wasn’t that good.” The senior said she’s definitely noticed the improvement of their No.3 doubles team as of late. “Emily VonBerge and Ashlyn Ratike have really stepped up,” Arnold said. “They play really well together.” The key is getting everyone to play their best tennis at the same time, as different players have come on strong, while others tapered off, Arnold said. “One person does well one day, and another person does bad,” she said. So GSL will have to find some consistency this week in order to maintain that No.3 spot come sections. The Panthers host New London-Spicer on Thursday for parents’ and senior night, starting at 4:15 p.m. They then have a week off before the team section tournament starts on Oct. 2 at St. John’s University.

Boys post another top-10 finish at NYA
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The boys’ cross country team posted another top-10 finish last week, competing at Baylor Park against 19 teams with 132 runners. A fifth-place finish was good for 155 points, as Brandon Richter and Jac Chelman continue to lead the way for Glencoe-Silver Lake. The two finished one after another, with Richter taking 10th place (17:38) and Chelman 11th (17:45). Garrett Ober finished in 24th place as GSL’s No.3 runner, with a time of 18:30. Head coach Jeff Delwiche said his team needs to find some solid runners in the latter half of the lineup to start placing a little higher. “We have some really good performances from half the team, we just need to put it all together,” Delwiche said. “We don’t need another fourth in there, we need someone closer to Ober, Chelman and those guys.” GSL finished three spots behind Jordan at Baylor, and two spots behind them at the meet held in Montgomery two weeks ago. Delwiche feels his team should be able to out perform Jordan, but needs a solid team performance. “I think if we put it all together, we can beat Jordan,” Delwiche said. “But they’ve got a pretty nice pack for their third, fourth and fifth runners. Ours are kind of all over the place right now. If we pack them together like we can with our top two, I think we can beat them.” GSL’s top three runners

At one point it was 20-7 until the White Hawks ripped off three straight points. Mound-Westonka fought hard to try and extend the game to four sets, but GSL dug in and pulled off the sweep, winning set three 25-20. Captain Steph Klockmann was all over the court Tuesday night, recording three of GSL’s four blocks, and led the team in kills with 15. Five Panthers were in double digits in digs, with the team recording 77 total. GSL looked a lot more aggressive and focused at the net, posting a 28.07 attacking percentage, compared to -7.14 in the loss against Sibley East.

touchdowns without my offensive line and Jake Stuedemann with his outstanding blocks on the outside,” Clouse echoed. The Panthers now host the 3-0 Wildcats from New LondonSpicer this week, as GSL looks to improve to 3-1 in the Wright County Conference. Friday night is Randy Shaver’s Tackle Cancer Night, where cash donations will be accepted at the door. It is also parents’ night for the cheerleaders and football players. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Stevens Seminary Stadium. *** Starting from their own 27 yard line, the Cardinals went three and out, putting GSL on its own 30 yard line after a punt. GSL was in the midst of a 13play, seven-minute drive when Anderson rolled to his left on third and eight from the Annandale eight yard line. With nowhere to throw, Anderson tried to force a pass that ended up in the hands of Annandale’s Austin Kalla, who returned it to the Annandale 22 yard line. On third and one, Annadale’s Andrew Russek rushed for six yards and a first down. But Annandale’s drive stalled three plays later as Matt Miller punted to GSL. Clouse gained a first down on third and one with an 11-yard joust up the middle. The Panthers tried to air it out again on second and 10, but the Cardinal defense flapped its wings and soared in for another interception, as Brock Fobbe jumped in front of Anderson’s pass. That’s when the Panther defense cranked it up a notch, stopping Riley Atkinson for a one yard loss on first down. An incompletion and a Tyler Donnay sack later, and the Cardinals were faced with third and 14. Miller faked the punt and tried to scoot around the edge of the defense, but Keenan Mehlos stayed at home and ate Miller up after a three-yard gain as the Cardinals turned it over on downs. On fourth and three for GSL, Clouse got it again, this time for eight yards down to the Cardinal 26 yard line. He was stuffed on the next play, and Stuedemann only managed to gain two yards on second down, so Tschimperle called a time-out with 6:54 remaining in the half. Apparently the head coach wanted to make sure his quarterback wasn’t rattled, as Anderson threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Popelka that floated over two Cardinal defenders on the next play. The point after was blocked, so GSL settled for a 6-0 lead. The gap was shortlived as Annandale drove 85 yards in just over a minute to tie it up at 6-6 when Russek scored on a run to the right side from 25 yards out. With about five and a half minutes left in the half, the Panthers started from their own 33 yard line. Anderson gained 16 after fak-

Carter Pinske wraps up Annandale’s Kyler Fobbe with a little help from the rest of the Panther defense during the first quarter of Friday night’s game. ing to Clouse up the middle. Two gives to Clouse and another Anderson keeper brought GSL down to the Annandale 33. Stuedemann gouged the Cardinals for 16 yards, and the officials tacked on another five for a face-masking penalty. Anderson scored on a 12-yard keeper on the next play, and GSL went up 12-6 after failing to convert the two point attempt. Again, the Cardinals answered back. This time with a four-play drive, capped off by a 50-yard reverse pass that was caught by Kyler Fobbe. Miller took the snap, rolled right and handed it off to Atkinson on the reverse, who threw to a wide open Kyler Fobbe for the score. Atkinson completed a pass to Andrew Fort, converting the two point attempt, and giving Annandale a 14-12 edge with about a minute and a half remaining in the second quarter. GSL employed its version of the hurry up offense: four straight gives to Clouse up the middle for about 32 yards, before the drive stalled out on the Annandale 29 yard line three plays later. That prompted a kneel down from Atkinson as the teams went into the half. Starting from their own 35 yard line, the Panthers scored on their third play of the half when Clouse plowed his way through the left side of the line and broke free for a 55-yard touchdown. Anderson hit the fullback in the flat on the conversion as GSL took a 20-14 lead just 65 seconds into the third quarter. Annandale went three and out, and gave the ball back to the Panthers at their own 24 yard line. Forty two yards on four Clouse gives and GSL was down to the Annandale 33. Just when the Cardinals keyed in on Clouse, Stuedemann pounced around the outside for a 33 yard score. Another failed conversion left the score 26-14 in favor of GSL. The Cardinals just wouldn’t go away, though, scoring in less than a minute this time. Atkinson completed a slant to Russek that went for 55 yards down to the GSL 10 yard line. Two plays later, Atkinson found Miller in the corner of the endzone on a fade, as Annandale pulled within six after the point after failed. But Clouse beat down the Cardinal defense on the ensuing drive, as he carried nine times, gaining 39 yards, and scored from six yards out. He even converted the two-point attempt, giving GSL a 34-20 lead. The fourth quarter was when you could see the Clouse effect coming into play. With Annandale deep in Panther territory, and almost 11 minutes remaining, GSL put Clouse in at defensive tackle on third and 10. Atkinson took the snap, and before he knew it, Clouse had his paws on him in the backfield for a 10 yard sack. The Cardinals turned the ball over on downs on the next play. Picking up where Annandale left off, Anderson bolted for a 70yard scamper around the right side after faking to Clouse up the middle on the first play. Annandale never saw it coming, as no one laid a finger on the quarterback. The Cardinals took over on their own 32 yard line, down 4120. Atkinson’s first pass landed in the hands of Mehlos, who huffed and puffed his way for a 30-yard touchdown, putting the Panthers up 48-20. Annandale went three and out, and GSL subbed in the JV players with almost nine minutes left in the game.

Estimate corn yields before harvesting
By Dave Nicolai Extension educator-crops The Minnesota Ag Statistics Field Office released the field crop status report on Sept. 9, which reports that 85 percent of corn was in the dough stage, compared to 94 percent average. Fifty percent of corn was in the dent stage, compared to 72 percent average. A concern for the balance of this fall and next spring is the amount of moisture in the topsoil, which was rated last week as 31 percent very short and 38 percent short across Minnesota’s major crop growing area. In many areas of the state, however, the corn is yet rated 44 percent in good condition because of previous rains this summer and good water holding capacities in heavier textured soils in southern Minnesota. Corn growers in Minnesota may want to predict grain yields prior to harvest in order to help develop grain marketing and harvest plans. One option is to use a recently updated yield component method originally developed by the Agricultural Engineering Department at the University of Illinois. These yield components include number of ears per acre, number of kernel rows per ear, number of kernels per row, and weight per kernel. Final weight per kernel obviously cannot be measured until the grain is mature (kernel black layer) and, realistically, at harvest moisture. Consequently, an average value for kernel weight, expressed as 80,000 kernels per 56-pound bushel, is used as a proverbial “fudge factor” in the yield estimation equation. The equation originally used a “fudge factor” of 90, but kernel size has increased as hybrids have improved over the years. Consequently, a “fudge factor” of 75 to 85 is a more realistic value to use today. Crop uniformity greatly influences the accuracy of any yield estimation technique. The less uniform the field, the greater the number of samples that should be taken to estimate yield for the field. Calculate estimated grain yield using the yield component method as follows: • Count the number of harvestable ears in a length of row equivalent to 1/1000th acre. For 30-inch (2.5 feet) rows, this equals 17.4 feet. For other row spacings, divide 43,560 by the row spacing (in feet) and then divide that result by 1000. • On every fifth ear, count the number of kernel rows per ear and determine the average. Try to use a system such as the fifth, ninth and 13th ears from one end of the row. • On each of these ears count the number of kernels per row and determine the average. Then multiply each ear’s row number by its number of kernels per row to calculate the total number of kernels for each ear. (Do not count kernels on either the butt or tip of the ear that are less than half the size of normal size kernels.) • Yield (bushels per acre) equals (ear number) x (average row number) x (average kernel number) divided by 80* = bushels per acre. • *Range in kernel number per bushel based on growing conditions: Excellent = less than 75; average = 75 to 85; and poor growing conditions = greater than 85. • Repeat the procedure for at least four additional sites across the field. Calculate the average yield for all the sites to estimate the yield for the field. Sources for this article included: Bob Nelsen, 2013. Estimating Corn Grain Yield Prior to Harvest.
