Auxiliary seeks cancelled stamps
Silver Lake American Legion Auxiliary Unit 141 is saving used (cancelled) postage stamps as one of its programs.
Please leave a quarter-inch border around the stamp if possible so the stamp doesn’t get damaged. A quick way to do this is to tear off the corner of the envelope with the stamp on it. Machine-metered postmarks are not being collected.
Especially valuable are older stamps with a monetary amount on the stamp as well as entire scenic postcards and pictorial pheasant or duck stamps. The stamps are sent to the auxiliary’s state office and sold to stamp collectors to raise funds for veterans’ projects, including equipment for state veterans’ homes and hospitals.
Cancelled stamps can be dropped off at the Legion Club at 241 Main St. E in Silver Lake, or given to any auxiliary member. For more info, call Mabel Hlavka at 320-327-2149.
