Baseball finishes with a flourish
A six-game winning streak to finish the regular season gave the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team a 14-5 overall record as the Panthers now turn their attention to the postseason.
GSL was given the No. 4 seed for the Section 5AA bracket and is scheduled to host 13th-seeded Watertown-Mayer at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Panthers outscored the Royals 24-1 in the team’s two Wright County Conference West meetings this season.
Starting pitcher Black Mickolichek tossed a complete game three-hitter as GSL finished off the regular season with a 9-2 win at conference champion Litchfield on Monday, May 20.
Spencer Lilienthal had three RBI, while Michael Waibel drove in two runs and scored twice himself in the win.
Gabe Roepke launched a walk-off two-run homer as the Panthers headed into the weekend with a 5-3 home win over Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Friday, May 17.
Roepke went 2-for-3 in the game to help make a winner out of Ty Christensen, who tossed 1-2/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief of starter Brett Baumgarten.
Three days previous, GSL avenged a 4-2 home loss to New London-Spicer by topping the host Wildcats 6-1 behind a complete game five-hitter by Korey Johnson. The senior struck out eight batters in the game.
Bennett Lepel went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one scored on a two-run homer. Spencer Lilienthal went 1-for-2 with a two-run triple.
