Blood drive tops goals; Bloodmobile returning in April

To the editor,
The final Glencoe Community Blood Drive for 2019 was held Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1 to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross set our goal at 104 units, and we exceeded that goal by collecting 115 units: 78 Whole Blood units and 37 from Power Red units.
The Red Cross is in such dire straits for its blood supply that they were very happy with the number of units that were donated. A special email to us from the ARC stated, “Huge thank you to the whole team. 110 percent is awesome.” Each unit collected may help up to three people, so the 115 total units may provide hope and life to 345 patients.
Our scheduling coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier and 13 additional volunteers provided their time and services before and during this blood drive. They are Judy Bulau, Marne Long, Marge Mayer, Elrena Scharpe, Sharon Schauer, Joyce Schiroo, Barb Schrupp, Jackie Selchow, Karin Steinert, Joan Wandrei, Karen Wendlandt, Jan Wendorff, and Germayne Winter. The dedicated workers do publicity, greeting and registering, preparing and serving canteen, and cooking.
Carol Adams, a long-time volunteer officially retired this year after serving as a volunteer at our serving tables for almost 15 years. Her faithful and selfless service all these years is very much appreciated. If you see Carol, please thank her for her devoted service to the Glencoe community at the blood drives.
Because of advertising policy changes for this newspaper, I am not allowed to thank by name the for-profit local businesses which also support the Glencoe blood drives. But you know who you are, and we are grateful for your commitment and support to the ARC and the Glencoe Community blood drives.
The 12 members of the ARC staff arrived before 11:30 a.m. for setup in the beautiful City Center ballroom and departed after 8 p.m. They arrived with nine interview booths, eight whole-blood beds, and four Power Red (double-red) beds. It is a long day for the ARC staff, and they appreciate the light meal provided to them in the late afternoon. Their end-of-the-day note stated, “Team Supervisor Jenny and ARC Staff thank you so much for having us and providing a great meal.”
Each drive is a team effort, comprised of volunteers, ARC staff, and most importantly, the donors. The efforts of the volunteers help us fulfill our lifesaving mission to the American Red Cross. The donors take one of the blessings they have been given – the gift of life – and pay it forward. Each drive is truly a community team effort for which the American Red Cross and its recipients are grateful.
The next Glencoe community blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at the Glencoe City Center ballroom, from 1-7 p.m. We have many donors who have already pre-scheduled their April appointments. If you would like to preregister for a time slot, please contact Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475.
May you and your families have a Happy Thanksgiving, a blessed Christmas, and a safe and healthy New Year.
Charleen Engelmann,
