Boys’ hoops takes a split

After earning a split in a pair of road games at Mound Westonka and Rockford, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team brought an 8-7 record in to a two-game homestand this week.
The Panthers opened last week with a 66-61 win at Mound Westonka on Tuesday, Jan. 15, led by a 19-point game by guard Dane Schwirtz.
Forwards Gage Alsleben and Mitchel Jaskowiak scored 18 and 13 points, respectively, at GSL rallied from a 31-30 halftime deficit to record the five-point win – the team’s first in Wright County Conference West play.
Friday night saw the Panthers travel to Rockford to take on the Rockets.
After falling behind by eight points early, GSL battled back to take a 21-20 lead on a three-pointer by Schwirtz with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
Rockford took a 31-30 edge into the halftime locker room.
The Rockets continued to hold the advantage in the second half, however, the Panthers remained in contention until late.
GSL trailed 63-61 with three minutes to play before the hosts closed out the game on a 10-0 run to bloat the final margin of victory after what had been a tight game throughout.
Schwirtz once again led the Panthers with 19 points, claiming high-scoring honors on the night, while Jaskowiak chipped in 10 points.
The loss dropped GSL to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in WCC West competition.
The Panthers returned home on Tuesday, after the Chronicle went to press, hosting conference rival New London-Spicer.
GSL remains home Friday night for a matchup against WCC West foe Annandale. The Cardinals entered this week with a 5-9 overall record, 1-2 in conference play.
