Boys’ basketball snaps losing skid

A 55-36 defeat of visiting Litchfield on Friday, Feb. 9, snapped a four-game losing streak for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team and boosted the Panthers’ record to 8-12 on the season entering this week.
The victory came in the second game of back-to-back home contests for GSL, which was back on its home court for the first time Jan. 23.
Neither the Panthers nor the Dragons put up much of a fight in the first half, as the hosts went to halftime leading just 18-15.
However, GSL was able to put some space between them and a lethargic Litchfield side in the second half and the Panthers cruised to the 19-point win after scoring 37 points in the final 18 minutes.
Forwards Kyle Christensen and Gabe Roepke led GSL with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
The result was a far better one than in the previous night’s contest against Belle Plaine.
The Panthers took a double-digit first-half lead on the visiting Tigers, only to watch the advantage disappear by halftime.
Trailing 33-31 at the break, things got worse for GSL in the second half as Belle Plaine pushed their lead to double digits before heading home with a 66-56 win.
Christensen led the Panthers with 21 points, with guard Dane Schwirtz scoring 14 points.
GSL was back on the road for a game at Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, Feb. 13, but the Panthers return home for a Friday night matchup against Annandale.
