Boys’ hoopsters conclude 2018 with holiday tourney

A win and a loss in its holiday tournament game the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team a 6-4 record as it heads into the second full month of the season.
The Panthers opened holiday tournament play by fending off a scrappy effort from Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity, defeating the Bulldogs 51-38 on Thursday, Dec. 27.
Guard Reece Schwirtz led GSL with 12 points as the hosts built a 25-20 halftime lead on their way to a 13-point win. Forward Gage Alsleben and guard Mitchel Klockmann posted nine points apiece in the victory.
A tournament title was not quite in the cards for the Panthers as GSL fell 60-49 in the championship game the next night.
The Fire, which bested Belle Plaine 78-42 in its tourney opener, took a slim 25-22 halftime lead on the Panthers before holding off the hosts over the second half before claiming the 11-point win.
Forward Mitchel Jaskowiak led all scorers with 15 points, with Alsleben posting 13 points in the loss. Schwirtz score eight points, with fellow backcourter Ty Christensen recording six points.
GSL’s tournament record matched its results in last season’s holiday tourney, when the Panthers topped Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity in the opener before losing to Holy Family in the title contest.
GSL returns to the court with a pair of home games against Section 2AA rivals this week.
The Panthers host Jordan Thursday night before welcoming LeSueur-Henderson to town Friday evening.
