Brownton considers liability insurance, doubling utilities access charge

The Brownton City Council discussed and tabled increasing the city’s connection charges for water, sewer and natural gas as well as its liability coverage at its meeting Tuesday, July 2.
Discussion around liability coverage, especially as it pertains to alcohol-related events, came as some cities in Minnesota are making changes to their liability coverage. As the council considers following suit, it wants to ensure the city’s liability coverage indicates that the renter’s insurance carries the social host liability, not the city.
The council was deciding between $500,000, the minimum recommended by the League of Minnesota Cities, and $1 million coverage for residents looking to rent city facilities for events. The council tabled the item to gather more information.
