Brownton eyes potential east wing of old school demolition

A Brownton school building could be seeing its final day.
The city council discussed the east wing of the school’s possible demolition at its meeting Tuesday, June 8. City engineer John Rodeberg gave reports of mold and possible asbestos in the building.
This part of the old school building includes classrooms and a shop that houses some equipment. City clerk Lori Cacka said this idea isn’t new to the council, since the building is getting old, starting to fall down and becoming a hazard. The city took ownership of the former Brownton school and McLeod West School District building for about a decade.
“It’s been something that they wanted to do for a while, and it’s getting to be time,” Cacka said.
The city had an architect inspect the building and found a lot of issues, according to Rodeberg. Along with mold, the architect thought they identified asbestos in the ceiling and floor, too. The city council hasn’t made any decisions yet on what to do next, but a report would need to be done about issues in that part of the school beforehand costing around $8,000.
