Bruins rally to top Saints

A 1-2 stretch last week dropped the Brownton Bruins to the foot of the Crow River Valley League with a 2-8 record.
Brownton sandwiched a come-from-behind home win over Dassel-Cokato on Friday, June 22, with road losses at Waconia on Wednesday, June 20, and at Cologne on Sunday, June 24.
The Bruins trailed the Saints 4-0 after D-C scored two runs in the top of both the second and third innings.
However, Bryce Lindeman got Brownton on the board after a two-out walk. Lindeman stole second base and was driven home on an RBI single by Seth Schuette, deftly avoiding the catcher to safely slide home with his team’s first run.
Lindeman led off the sixth with another walk and steal, and was once again driven home by Schuette. Schuette later came home on an RBI single by Mason Goettl. Ryan Grams then scored on a fielder’s choice by Deryk Randt to knot the score at 4-4.
That’s how the score remained until the hosts exploded for four more runs in the eighth, with Joe Ahlers tallying the game-deciding score on a walk, two wild pitches and a passed ball.
Starting pitcher Grant Baumetz earned the win with eight innings of work. He struck out 12 batters, while allowing four hits, three walks and four runs (three earned). Austin Thompson tossed the final inning, allowing no baserunners while striking out two.
Two nights earlier, Brownton fell 7-0 at Waconia, with a fourth inning single by Goettl representing the entirety of the Bruins’ offense in the game. Josh Wendlandt started for the visitors and took the loss after three innings on the hill.
Brownton logged nine hits in Sunday’s loss at Cologne, but fell 12-2 in eight innings. Randt and Daniel Rosenau each scored for the Bruins. Schuette started on the hill and took the loss after five innings pitched.
This week, Brownton is scheduled to host Winsted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday before traveling to Plato for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The Bruins are slated to close out their pre-Independence Day schedule with a 5 p.m. home start against New Germany on Sunday.
