Carl John Selchow, 100, of Glencoe

Carl John Selchow, 100, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at his home at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe.
 
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 24, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg with the Rev. Donald Andrix officiating. Kathy Oelfke was the organist. The Emanuel Lutheran Church Men’s Choir sang “Beautiful Savior” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Congregational hymns were “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “Abide With Me.”
 
Casket bearers were Mr. Selchow’s grandchildren, Chuck Selchow, Donovan Selchow, Neina Selchow, Deric Selchow, Kelli Palmquist, Adam Kundinger and Ally Kundinger.
 
Interment was in the Emanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hamburg.
 
Carl John Selchow was born Jan. 8, 1916, in Plato, the son of Charles and Frieda (Franke) Selchow. He was baptized as an infant on Jan. 16, 1916, and confirmed in his faith as a youth on April 13, 1930, both by the Rev. Boumann at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. He attended Emanuel Lutheran School in Hamburg.
 
On May 18, 1941, he was united in marriage to Elsa Miller by the Rev. Ehlen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato. The couple made their home in Plato until two years ago, when they became residents of Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Charles, Stuart, Ethel, Sherril and Gail. They shared over 74 years of marriage.
 
Mr. Selchow was a farmer and enjoyed working the land and tending to the animals. He was a lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, where he served on the school board, and was a trustee, elder and custodian. He also was a member of the Hamburg Lions and served as a director and president of the Young America Mutual Insurance company.
 
Mr. Selchow enjoyed tractors, hunting, fishing, woodworking and flying in his son Stuart’s plane. He also loved spending time at their cabin in Menahga. he cherished the time spent with friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
 
He is survived by his wife, Elsa Selchow of Glencoe; children, Charles (Betty) Selchow of Green Isle, Stuart (Jackie) Selchow of Plato, Ethel Selchow of Warroad, Sherril (Gerald) Burr of Mesa, Arizona, and Gail (Todd) Kundinger of Midland, Michigan; grandchildren, Chuck (Lisa) Selchow, Donovan (Kristi) Selchow, Neina Selchow, Deric (Kari) Selchow, Kelli (Tad) Palmquist, Adam Kundinger and Ally Kundinger; great-grandchildren, Bennet Selchow, Arthina Selchow, Anna Selchow, Jack Palmquist, Jase Palmquist, Ben Selchow, Alex Selchow, Grant Selchow and Ace Selchow; sister-in-law, Esther Wroge of Glencoe; brother-in-law, Maynard Dammann of Glencoe; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Frieda Selchow; five brothers; three sisters; four sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.
