City of Brownton waiting on Rural Development approval of project bids

The Brownton City Council opened bids on the underground utilities and street surface portions of its comprehensive utility improvement project nearly a month ago, but may have to have a special meeting to actually award the bid.
John Rodeberg, engineer with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc., said at the City Council’s April 3 meeting that the bid still needs to be approved by Rural Development of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“It’s a great bid, but it hasn’t been approved yet by Rural Development,” said Rodeberg.
Rodeberg said the low bidder, R&R Excavating, Inc., of Hutchinson, would like to get to work by May 1, but between the need for approval and adverse spring weather, that may not happen.
R&R’s bid for the underground utilities and streets was $4.84 million. Rodeberg reminded the council that this is only one portion of the comprehensive project — there also is work to be done on the water tower and other facilities.
Rodeberg said there also is concern because R&R is also the low bidder on the city of Glencoe’s central storm water project, and whether the company could complete both projects in a timely manner.
