City can afford more hours at the elm site

To the Editor:
Last year, the elm site was open all summer for the convenience of convenience of the contractor rebuilding the Lincoln Park area. Did we have illegal dumping of trash? Yes! And he left his name and phone number with the trash. Was anything done about this illicit dumping? No! Seems the fellow has strong ties with upper city management.
The question of the week in The Chronicle asked about more open time at the elm site. Of the people who responded, 67 percent wanted more open time at the site. City administration responds to this by telling us it cost too much and other petty arguments.
Let’s clear the air about these costs. Last year, McLeod County gave the city $8,336.25 to run the elm site. Add the $1 we all pay on our utility bill, $24,000. Commercial accounts dumping at the site, $1,500. taxes levied to run the site, an additional mystery number. Total cash, $33,836.26 plus. Expenses: $16,836.51, which is questionable. Total profit: $16,997.75.
Appears to me we have enough money left to leave the site open and also pick up used appliances, which was part of the promise of city hall.
Should we open the elm site? Yes! It should be a no-brainer. Wait, I’ll have to check at city hall on that last part. You may want to do the same thing. Talk to your council person, or come to the city meetings.
