City OKs design standards for small cell wireless

With the potential of upgraded wireless phone and Internet service on the horizon and the Federal Communications Commission approving new rules for cities to allow placement of antennas in road rights-of-way, the Glencoe City Council OK’d new design standards for the antennas Monday night.
The new antennas will be capable of providing 5G-telephone service. The new small cell service will be available to companies that want to provide the upgraded service to area customers. The city currently has a wireless phone antenna on one of its water towers. If a wireless phone company wanted to enhance its coverage area in the city, additional antennas could be placed on city light poles at a company’s expense, said City Administrator Mark Larson.
