City personnel committee hears request to use city room, update on NE drainage

The city of Glencoe’s personnel and legislative committee heard a request from Common Cup to use one of the City Center’s rooms at its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon.
Common Cup, founded in 2001, is an organization of area churches that work to serve those in need in the community. The group does backpack food distribution to ensure kids in need have food on weekends, diaper distributions, food and gas vouchers and more.
Glencoe Common Cup program leader Roger Gronholz told the committee that the group wants to move from its current location in the First Lutheran Evangelical Church to the city center to show the work is a community effort. Though the group is based in the church, many of the volunteers are not members.
“It’s a space where we can get more community involvement,” Gronholz said.
The group would take over a room in the northwest corner of the center and use the north entrance. One of the doors to the room would provide access to the general City Center halls, but would be locked for staff only.
Gronholz said Common Cup would put about $6,000 to $7,000 worth of work into the room, including electrical, carpet, paint and other basics. It would construct a few walls for offices that would be a couple feet short of the ceiling.
Mayor Randy Wilson said he thought it was a great idea.
“That was the vision for the City Center, that it would be used for the community,” he said.
