Collins Township asks Stewart about shifting sections into Stewart fire district

Collins Township asked the city of Stewart Thursday night if it would consider taking over the sections it has in the Brownton fire district for fire protection.
The city of Stewart and its surrounding townships met jointly Thursday for its annual meeting regarding fire protection. Collins Township already has some sections in the Stewart fire district, and the Lake Marion area is in the Brownton Fire District.
Pete Maiers told the Stewart City Council and the other townships that Collins Township feels that it is being overcharged for coverage by the Brownton Fire Department, and has not signed a new 10-year fire protection with the city of Brownton.
Maiers said he has tried to meet with the city of Brownton, but that has not happened.
“We’re in the midst of … not a war … but a small battle,” said Maiers. “We’ve been trying to sit down with them since the first of the year.”
Maiers said Collins Township is paying twice as much to Brownton as it is to Stewart.
The costs with Brownton are based on property values, while other fire districts charge a flat rate per township section. Because of the valuation of the homes around Lake Marion, those sections are being charged more.
